Cricket 1904

274 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 21, 1904 passed that stage, and is as serious a matter as a league football match. In to the question whether Perrin, or any other modem batsman, is as good as Dr. Grace was when in his prime it is not necessary to enter here—old cricketers will say that there is absolutely no question at all about it. Whether if the Doctor were now at his best he would stand out as prominently among the dozens of famous batsmen as he did among the few who came to the front in his tim e; or whether Perrin would seem as marvellous a player as the Doctor if matches were few and good batsmen seldom seen, are questions which can never be satisfactorily answered. Suffice it to say that each in his way is a wonder ful batsman, and that many good judges of the game are prepared to swear that Perrin is the finest batsman in England at the present time, although he has never played for England or for the Gentlemen at L ord’s. When it comes to a question of fielding and bow ling Dr. Grace and Perrin are no longer to be considered in the same class, and as an all-round man no one has ever questioned the claim of Dr. Grace to be considered first and foremost. It must be remembered that while the Doctor’s career as a first-class cricketer extends over a period of forty years, Perrin played his first county match only eight years ago, and has therefore many years before him when he maybe expected to increase his reputation greatly. There is so much competition nowadays and so many more first-class matches than there used to be, which means so much more weak bow ling, that it is not at all remark able that Perrin holds only a few records. It is much more remarkable that Dr. Grace still holds several, although naturally enough, their number is de creasing year by year. But it will probably be some time before any other batsman deprives him of the record of making a score of 166 in his fifty-sixth year. W . A . B ett e sw o b t h . SUTTON v.
