J uly 14, 1904. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 261 YORKSHIRE v. KENT. THB MATCH ABANDONED. Played at Harrogate on July 7 and 8. It was asserted by the two captains on the second morning of this match that the broken places which had appeared on the first afternoon had been tampered with, and the wicket greatly improved. It was decided by the umpires, W . Shrewsbury and Pougher, after the Yorkshire first innings was completed, that the conditions were unfair, and the match was abandoned after the second days’ play. Some reference to the matter will be found in “ Gossip.” There does not seem much chance that an extra match can be arranged between the two counties this season. K ent . First, innings. Played at Leicester on July 7, 8 and 9. Derbyshire won by 306 runs. The moat noticeable feature of the first day’s cricket in this match was the splendid batting of L. G. Wright, who made his 140 in two hours and twenty minutes, his hits, which were often brilliant, including twenty-four 4’s. Ollivierre, Morton. Cad man, Needham and Warren all made useful additions to the score. When stumps were drawn Leicester shire had lost two good wickets for 48. On Friday the Leicestershire batting broke down in such an unexpected manner that Derbyshire had a lead of 188, which, when they declared their second innings closed, had been increased to 633. For this excellent position they had chitfly to thank Ashcroft, who played a flue innings of 100 in two hours and forty minutes, Ollivierre, Cadman, and Curgenven. Leicestershire had a few minutes batting before stumps were drawn, and made 6 runs without losing a wicket. On Saturday they never looked like accomplishing their task or playing out time, although Odell, who was not out overnight, made an excellent 66, while King played a fine innings Naturally the absence of Knight, who was unable tc play on account of the injury to his finger which he received in the Gentlemen v. Players’ match at Lord’s, was greatly felt by Leicestershire. D erbyshire . First innings. L.G.Wright, c R. Crawford, b Allsopp................. ... 140 C. A. Ollivierre, c R. OXFORD UNIVERSITY v. WORCES TERSHIRE. A RECORD AGGREGATE FOR ENGLAND. Played at Worcester on July 11, 12 and 13. Oxford University won by three wickets. So greatly superior was the batting to the bowling in this match that 1,492runs were scored, the previous record for England being beaten by 66 runs. On the first day the Worcestershire innings came to a con clusion just before stumps were drawn, every man on the side except one scoring double figures. W . B. Burns played brilliant cricket for three hours for his 165. The batting of the Oxford men on the next day was lees consistent than that of their opponents, but Carlisle and Raphael both played fine cricket. At the end of the day Worcestershire had scored 147 in their second innir gs for five wickets, and were 292 runs on. Worcestershire declared on Saturday with six wickets down, aud Oxford, with a little over four hours before them in vhich to make 400 runs, made a determined and successful effort to knock off the runs. Raphael was only at the wickets for an hour and three-quarters for his 111. Bennett and Carlisle both played a bold game, and in the end Oxford won a splendid victory by three wickets when only four minutes remained for play. First innings. H. K.
