Cricket 1904

258 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 14, 1904 most of the youngsters. But boys at school and private soldiers of the ordi nary type generally fall victims to lobs, for the reason that they do not distinguish between too much and too little caution.” “ Where did you generally field ? ” “ I think that as a rule I was at cover point or in the long field. I remember that once when I was playing for I Zingari at Gorhambury against a team chosen by Lord Verulam, I caught five men in the long field off Billy Rose’s lobs— it must be very seldom that as many as five catches come to any man in the long field in the course of an innings. Rose -was the bowler who took all ten ■wickets of the Canadian team which visited England many years ago.” “ Do you see any cricket now ? ” “ Not as much as I could wish, for my duties take up most of my time. But when I can I go to Lord’s. I have not seen W . G. Grace play for years, although I should much like to do so again. It seems strange that he should still be euch a fine batsmen after all these years; he was always the greatest player of my time. One of the men with whom I most frequently played for I Zingari w Captain Middleton, who was always known to us as ‘ Bay ’ Middleton. He was a fine bowler. He was also quite a famous rider, and he met his death through an accident in a steeplechase. Another I Zingari player whom I well remember was Chandos Leigh, who is now the Speaker’s Counsel.” Colonel Kenyon-Slaney is a football international. “ I played for England against Scotland,” he said, “ and unless my memory f»ils me, I scored the first two goals for England iu the first five minutes of the game. I also had the pleasure of playing on several occasions for the Old Etonians and the Wanderers in the Football Association Cup-ties, and among the men whom I remember very well as good players in those matches were C. W . Alcock, Lord Kinnaird, and Alfred Lyttelton, the Colonial Secretary. There was always a Lyttelton at Eton in my time, and always in my house (Evans’ house). Lord Kin naird was a rival of mine for a place in the football team at Eton, but I think I just managed to beat him.'1 W . A. B ettesworth . SUrTON v.
