Played at Leyton on June 20, 21 and 22. Yorkshire won by nine wickets. One or two mistakes in the field told so heavily on Essex in the first day’s cricket in this match that when stumps were drawn Yorkshire, with eight wickets in hand, wt-re only 54 runs behind. ihe wicket was hard and fast, but it occasionally gavethe bo-wlers some assistance, and Rhodes met with more success with the ball than has come in his way for some time. Sewell and Fane began so well for Essex that a big score seemed probable, but afterwards, F. H. Gillingham, who was a little lame, was the only man who seemed able to hold his own. Wben Yorkshire went in, Denton, who was not out 61 at the end of theday, and Wainwright (not out36),were boih mis»ed soon after they went to tbe tickets. On the next day Wain*right, Birst, Haigh and Lord Hawke all played excellent cricket and the Fssex total was beaten by 162. In the Essex secondinnings tbe first 50 luns w*re made in 43 minutes, but Sewell and Perrin both failed to distinguish themselves, and when stumps w»re drawn Essex were still 10 runs behind with only five wickt-ts in hand. Reeves played a trilliant game yesterday, but despite his tfforts Yorkshiie bad an easy task. E ssex First inning?. F. L. Played at Worcester on June 20 and 21. Somerset won by an innings and 114 runs. A remarkable innings by L. C. H. Palairet, and fine lowing by Braund wfre the chief feaiures of this match. Braund foundhis length, and kept it. and in ihe first Worcestershire innings took eight wickets for 81. In addition to this he helped Palairet to put up 117 for the first wicket in a little more than three- quarters of an hour. At the end of the first day’s play, Palairet was not out 197, a wond rful innings. The total was 314 for seven wickets, and Somerset were 140 runs on. Palairet wasdismissed on Tuesday morning soon after he passed his second hundred. He had batted for three hours without making a mistake, and among his hits were thirty 4’s. No other Somersetshire man did much, but when Woicestershire went in again they had to face a deficit of 178 Cranfield and Braund bowled so well tbat six wickets fell for 37, ard seven for f0. and Homercet gained a victory much more easily than they could have anticipated.
