Lord Dalmeny was captain of the Surrey team in this match, while Hayward, Hayes and Holland were the only men on the side who have represented Surrey for any great lengthof time. On the first day of the match OxforJ scored 378 while Surrey made 35 without losing a wicket. Three Oxford men made large scores, viz., J. E. Raphael, W. H. B. Evans and O T. Norris, but none of the team got into double figures. Perhaps the best innings of the day was the 54 by Evans, but Norris played bo finely that judges of the game were much impressed by his batting, and it is not surprising that ne has received his blue. In the abseuce of Lees the Surrey bowliog was anything but strong, although Gooder met with considerable success on a very easy wicket. On Tuesday Hayward was in great form. He began slowly enough, taking two hours to make fifty runs, but later he played attractive cricket, and when he was dismissed he had been batting for three hours and a half. His hits inoluded two 6 ’s and fourteen 4’s. L. V. Harper *lso played a fine innings, and every man on the side except Bale and dadfleld made double figures. When the innings came to an end Surrey had a lead of 21 runs. Oxford batted for twemy minutes before stumps weredrawn, and made 14 runs for the loss of a wicket. Yesterday Awdry and Evans played a delightful game, and later Raphael hit the cowling all over the field, scoring 123 in the course of a couple of hours. His hits included two 5’s and fourteen *’s. Surrey had to make 316, but as they only hau two hours and a half before them they played for * draw. Hayward and Hayes were botn in splendid form. O xford U niversity . First inning* J. E.
