212 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, J une 23, 1904. F O R G O T T E N S C O R E S * The scope of this book may be best described in the compiler’s own words:— “ The full scores of the sixty matches these pages contain were not recorded in ‘ Wisden’s Almanack.’ The compiler had long felt convinced that a volume embodying these missing matches would be welcomed bv many readers of ‘ Wisden,’ and judging by the readiness with which the book has been subscribed for, it is evident that this confidence is not misplaced. At the same time, it seemed desirable that the record should be limited to First-class Matches, and here at the outset, a slight difficulty arose. Before the year 1886, there seems to have been no universally accepted definition of the term, ‘ First Class,’ at least in the strict sense in which we now understand it............. I had no inclination to set up a home-made definition of my own, but preferred to take as a standard test the yearly tables of ‘ First-class Averages ’ as given in ‘ Lillywhite’s Cricketers’ Companion, ’ which date back to the season of 1866.” The compiler also shows how difficult it has ■been—sometimes it has been impossible—to get correct analyses, but he adds: “ As a slight set-off against these shortcomings I have succeeded in unearthing more than one analysis that had been declared ‘ unobtain able.’ Where no analyses was kept I have simply entered opposite the bowler’s name the number of wickets captured.” The book is well bound, and is printed in beautifully clear type ; without doubt it will be greatly appre ciated by many cricketers, and it is certain that no collector of cricket books can do without it. •Scores and Analyses. 1^64-1881.
