SURREY y. ESSEX . Played at the Oval on June 13, 14 and 15. Essex won by an innings and 196 runs. Batticg on a perfect wicket on Monday, Essex made 396 runs for the loss of only three wickets. Most of the runs were scored in partnership by Carpenter and McGahey, who, coming together when two wicket j were down for 67, added 328 mns for tne third wicket in four hours by cricket which, if it was not very exciting, waa always correct and scientific. During the long partnership there were periods when the play became even tediousto watch, and Carpenter, after he had reached his hundred, was an hour in scoring the next 30 runs, although he had quite taken the measure of the bowling ; but, on the whole, runs came at a good pace. Carpenter was dismissed five minutes before stumps were drawn, when he only required a single run to complete hissecondhundred ; he was at the wickets for five hours and a quarter, and can hardly be said to have m*de a really bad stroke ; his hits included twenty-three4’s. McGahey was still unconquered with 143 to his credit. As there was prospect of heavy rain during the night Surrey men could not look forward with much cheer fulness to the remainder of the match. It was thought that Essex would probably endeavour to make runs very quickly on the next morning, but Sewell and McGahey played verycarefullyuntil, with the total at 467for four wickets, the long and patient innings of the latter came to a close ; he had been at the wickets for five hours, and his hits included two 5’s and nineteen 4’s. Tosetti then played a pretty game, and his partnership with Sewell produced 105 runs in an hour. Sewell made some big hits now and then, and at lunch time he was not out 106, after batting for two hours and twenty minutes. Natur ally, the innings was now declared closed, and Surrey had a bad time, the first three wickets fal.ing for *2 runs. Bayward and Hayes then made a much needed stand, but at 78 Hayward and Smith were both dismissed. The tail played up well, but the innings came to an end just before rain stopped play for the day. Yesterday in the follow-on Hayes and Holland played a great game, but by lunch time the match was practically over. E ssex . F. L.
