In 1861-2 the results of the matches played against eighteens and twenty- twos were always a foregone conclusion, but so rapidly did the Colonials improve in their play, that in 1876-7 a picked eleven was able to inflict a defeat upon the English profes sional team of that season. Since that period it has been fully realised that in the bronzed Colonists England has “ foemen worthy of her steel.” It will be observed that of the 40 matches played abroad between the two countries, the Australians have won four more than their friendly adversaries. In this connection it must be remembered that England has never been able to place a perfectly representative team in the field in Australia. “ Bat who have been the makers of history in these historic matches?” For answer the following particulars are given relating to the chief feats with bat and ball accomplished in these contests.
