Cricket 1904

J une 9, 1904. CRICKET. A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. When fctumps were drawn Gloucestershire, for whom Jessop was unable to play on account of an injured finger, had lost two wickets for 44. Palairet made a wonderful catch in the long field, and thus got rid of Wratball. On Friday most of the Gloucestershire men failed, but Spryand Sellickplayed usefulinnings. Somerset had a lead cf 37. They did badly in their pecond innings at first, losing six wickets for 111 , but the tail i layed up so finely that the total was more than doutled before the last man was out. Newton and Martyn both played delightful cricket, and Lee showed sound defence for an hour and ten minutes. Gloucestershire had now to make 262 to win and before the end of the day lost three men for 17, so that their prospects of victory were by no means good. On Saturday things went so badly with Gloucestershire that half the tide were out for 34. Thomas and Harnett made a splendid stand for the seventh wicket, putting on 92 runs in just over an hour, but no one else could make any resistance to the bowling. Barnett played a wonderfully good defensive game for two hours and ahalf, andpossibly if someone b<sides Thomas (who made his runs in about 50 minutes) could have stayed with him and hit, his side might have won the match.
