Cricket 1904
178 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME; J une 9, 1904 pitch has, ia p irt, gone, but the flood of his utterance is even yet no tiny rivulet; it still flows with a measured energy and with considerable volume. . . . Prom the commencement of his run up to the wicket his delivery always struck one as the very poetry of motion. Compared with the impassioned, hair-streaming rhapsodists who pnur forth, so to speak, a wild torrent and finish near the b its - man’s nose, his fastest deliveries were unimpassioned, had something of light and culture about them. H e always knew what he was doing with the ball, for a perfect workmanship was wedded to the natural spontaniety and ability with which fate had originally endowed him. Doubtless some people don’t mind about grace at all, and, true enough, getting men out is the main thing. The cultured Fabian in his drawing-room explaining how, by an alteration in the incidence of taxation, he can take from the House of Have and bestow upon the House of Want, simply puts forward a solution of the same problem and ,in essentials, the same method as the harsher-voiced gentleman at the street corner who is apparently anxious to string heads upon the nearest lamp-post. So the man who wants slips with cast iron hands, and persuades you to nibble at him until you foolishly bite, serves the same purpose as the bowler who knocks your stumps asunder and compels you to realise that the next time the same ball comes along the same result will obtain. Tom Richardson had the method and the sinuous gracefulness of statement of the Fabians, but he needed no slips in those days.” W . A . B e tt esw o r th . INCOGNITI v.
