Until lunch time onMonday the wicket at the Oval was anything but easy, and with a little luck Lees might have had a first-rate analysis. Evenas it was, half the Gloucestershire wickets were down for 75 when lunch time came. But afterwards, on an im proving wicket, the Gloucestershire men steadily went ahead, and in the end the county could point to a satisfactory total. The chief credit for this belongs to Langdon, Spry and Board, who all played good cricket. The two former played with great caution, and were a long time in miking their runs, but for ail that they showed really good cricket, and both men ought to be of good use to Gloucestershire in the future. Board’s innings was the most interesting to watch in the day’s cricket, and he showed quite his old form which he seemed to have lost. Jessop went in tenth on account of an injury to his finger. He batted with one hand, and his useful innings of 10 runs included a fine drive to the boundary. Surrey had to face a total of 242 fifty minutes before stumps were drawn. They fared so badly that when the day’s play ended they had only put up 39 runsfor the loss ot Abel, Hayward and Hayes, and were thus in a very unpromisiog position. Holland was not out 8, and H. B. Chinnery not out6. Owing toheavy rain there was no further play in the match. G l o u c e s t e b s h ib e . S. A. P. Several members of the South African team had played for London County and the M.C.C. so that when this match began on Monday they were not altogether unprepared to take part in first-class cricket. The M.C.C. were able to put a much stronger all round team in the field than usual, but on the first day’s play there was little to choose between the sides. The wicket was never very difficult, and could not be said to help the bowlers much. Four of the visitors were seen to great advantage, but the other seven only made 18 runs between them out of a total of 189 from the bat. Shalders and Tancred made a fairly good beginning, and the first wicket put up 37, of which 24 were claimed by Tancred who had shown excellent form. But for some time after this Bosanquet, whose bowling must have been quite strange to the South Africans, carried everything before him, and half the wickets were down for 95. Sinclair played a very lively and attractive innings. Twice he hit Mead into the pavilion seats, and twice hit Bosanquet into the grand stand, all the strokes being made without any apparent exertion. So far there seemed no promise that a reasonably large score would be made, but Llewellynplayed a brilliant
