Cricket 1904
166 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 2 , 1904^ NOTTS v. ESSEX. Played at Trent Bridge on May 26, 27 and 28. Drawn. At one o’clock on the first day rain came down heavily, and although the game was resumed for a few minutes afterlunch the whole time available was only about an hour and five minutes. Essex made 61 for two wickets, Perrin being not out 25, and McGahey not out 4. There was no play at all on Friday, and on Saturdav it was necessary to wait until one o’clock before there was any cricket. The game was then resumed under the most cheerless conditions, for the light was bad and the weather depre«sing. The only point of interest was the baiting of Perrin, who played a great game under difficulties. When he bad reached his hundred the innings was closed, and the Notts men did fairly well when they went in to playout time. E s s e x . F. L. Played at Derby on May 26, 27 and 28. Drawn. Up to lunch-time on Thursday last the game went fo well for Derbyshire that they had disposed of six Yorksbiremen for 128; but rain then intervened, and handicapped the bowlers so much that the next three wickets put on 98 runs, and when stumps were drawn the total was 236 for nine wickets. The best innings of the day was the 70 made by Denton, who for two hoursplayed a very skilful game. Three of the Yorkshire bowlers — Khodes. Haigh and Mytra—also distinguished themselves. As therewaa a prospect of more rain there did not seem much chance that Derbyshire would be able to come out of the match wilh much credit, but afier a day’s rest owing to rain, they easily saved the game on Satur day. The Yorkshire bowlers had to work on a wicket which diied very slowly, but they seemed hardly up to their usual form, and Storer and Cur- genven played finecricketagainst them. Thefollow- on was saved without difficulty, and Yorkshire, with no possible chance of finishirg the mutch, lost three wickets for 25 before the matca was over. Y orkshire . First innings. Cambridge won by an innings and 36 runs. Dr. Grace was able to take a strong batting team to Cambridge, but the bowling at his command was of such a kind that no one could have been surprised when the Univereity made a bi* score agaiust it. The match was a triumph for the University both in battin; and bowling. On the first day Hopley bowled so finely for them that the London County team waa dismissed in an hour and twenty-five minutes, not a single man being able to get go ng. When the Varsity went in they had not to meet any bowler with a reputation except the Doctor himself, and when stumps were drawn they had scored 200 for three wickets. Keigwin, who carried hia bat for 58, helped Mann to put on 142 runs for the second wicket in about an hour and a half. On Friday K. R. B. Fry hit brilliantly, and hia innings included nineteen 4’s ; he was at the wickets for two hours and a half. During hia partnerahip with Phillips 110 runa were put on in an hour and a quarter, while May helped him to score 83 for the last wicket. Keigwin was batting for three hours for his patient 64. London County had made 166 for four wickets when stumps were drawn, and were thus siill 203 runs behind. The Doctor played excellent cricket for an hour and a quarter for his 46. On the next day Poidevin, who was not out 49 oveinight, and L. Walker (not out 31) made a fine stand, and they were not separated until their partnership had produced 145 runs. At lunch time f’oidevin was not out 95. When, a fewminutes after the game was resumed, he was dismissed he had teen tatting steadily for three hours and a quarter, and had done his best to save his side from dtfeat. The last wicket fell at a quarter to four. L ondon C ou nty . First inniogs. Second innings.
