Cricket 1904

164 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, J u n e 2, 1904. only 21 years of age in January last, in addi tion to appearing for Worcestershire and Hampshire, has also assisted the Gentlemen against the Players at Lord’s. Apart from Raphael, who bids fair to develop into a great run-getter, Evans is by far the most promising cricketer at the present time at either University. Last year, for some rea son which did not transpire, he did not assist Hampshire after the University season was over, the county being thereby deprived of the services of a player who would have proved a tower of strength to the side. At the commencement of the present season it appeared as though Cambridge would be able to place a very poor side in the field; their display against Yorkshire was certainly far from suggesting great things in the future. Their performances, however, when opposed to Mr. Weigall’s Gentlemen of England XI. and London County, although accomplished against sides somewhat weak in bowling, should do much to spur the eleven on to great deeds. “ Success begets success,” and victories obtained against even moderate teams should inspire confidence. In M. W. Payne the Light Blues possess a very sound wicket-keeper, who can also score well at times. For three years he was in the Wel lington X I., and is this season a Freshman at Cambridge. In the match against London County last week he was in very fine form behind the wicket, making four catches in the first innings and two in the second : further more he did not allow a single bye in the first innings (77) and only four in the second, which amounted to 333.
