NOTTS. Played at Brighton on May 16, 17 and 18. Sussex won by five wickets. On a wicket which helped the bowlers a little the batting of the Notts men on the first day was of a distinctly unattractive kind, and even A. O. Jones, who is generally a fairly fast scorer, was an hour and twenty minutesinmaking his 37 runs. George Gunn played a most useful innings, andthe patience which he showed during a stay of two hours and a half at the wickets was worthy of the highest praise from a Notts point of view, for without his innings the side would have fared very badly. When seven wickets were down it looked as if the total would not be more than about a hundred, but somecatches were missed, and Hallam and Oates werethus ableto make a valuable stand. In an hour and five minutes Fry and Vine put on 75 for the firstwicket, and when Fry was bowled for a fine innings of 48, Killick played a good game. Vine was out a few minutes before stumps were drawn; he had made 44 in about an hourand three-quarters. Killickwasnot out 28, and the total was 129 f nr three wickets—only 27 runs behind. Killick and Relf played exceedingly well on Tuesday, but the last five wickets only put on 32 runs, so that the lead on the first innings was by no means as great a9 might have been hoped for. When Notts went in against a balance of 90, Jones and Iremonger took the score to within four of this number in an hour, when Jones was lbw. After this the bowlers began to get the upper hand, with the result that Sussex were left with the easy task of making 98 runs to win. A quarter of an hour remained for play, and Sussex made 9 runs without losing a wicket. Yesterday things went so badly with thpm that four wickets were down for 48, but Relf played exceedingly well, and the remaining runs were soon knocked off. N o tts . First innings. Second innings A.
