Played at Lords’ on May 16 and 17. M.C.C. won by 33 runs. While in most of the matches which were played at the beginning of the week the batsmen had a fairly good chance of distinguishing themselves, the bowlers at Lords’ had matters much their own way on a fast but not very good ticket. The M.C.C. team included four members of the South African team, and two Australians, Trott and Tarrant. Two of the South Africans, Tancred and Shepstone, came off well with the bat, both playing a very careful game, and Shepstone nearly succeeded in carrying his bat after a stay at the wickets of an hour and ten minutes, while Tancred was about the same time in compiling 45. Both men played very sound if not very attractive cricket. Trott’s innings was of the kind which is vastly admired by spectators, for in the course of just over half an hour, he made 43 out of 59. Thanks to missed chances Kent, after a bad beginning, did better than they could have expected. By far the best innings was played by the captain who, in about an hour and three quarters, made 71 by beautiful cricket. Several othermen made useful scores, but the only outstanding innings was that of Murrell, whose hitting was vigorous. The innings came to a close just before stumps were drawn, the M.C.C. haviog a lead of 24. There was some very curious cricket on the next day. The M.C.C. hattinpr broke down badly against the bowliog of Fielder and Blythe, and Tarrant was the only man who succeeded in making over twenty runs; he played a most patient innings, being at the wickets for an hour and a half for his 24. Kent only required 131 runs to win, tut the rapid downfall of the M.C.C. wickets pointed toconsiderable difficultiesinthepath towards vict ,ry. The openiDg of the innings was disastrous. When only ten runs were on the board, four wickets were down, all to Hesketh Prichard who, on the fiery wicket is extremly difficult to deal with. The fifth wicket fell with the total at 12. Meanwhile Alec Hearne was going steadily on, and with Baker as a partner he took tne score to 31. He survived until the total was 43, when he was at last dismissed for a very plucky 29. Seven wickets were now down. Fairservice and Huish looked almost like pulliog the match out of the fire, but this could not be done, and the M.O.C. wonanexcitingmatch. Hesketh Prichard, who did not bowl in the first inniogs, took sixwickets for 23. M.C.C. an d G rou nd . First innings. Capt. E. G. Wynyard, b Blythe................................ 8 L J. The batting of the Yorkshiremen on the first day was remarkable for its consistency, Brown alone failing to make doublefigures. Although Tunnicliffe made the highest score, his was not the best innings of the day, for he met with more than ordinary good fortune in the way of dropped catches. On the other hand. Hirst once more played a great game, and scored 76 in an hour and three-quarters, helping Tunnicliffe to put on 111 runs for the third wicket. The Yorkshire innings came to a conclusion just in time to allow Leicestershire to lose one of their best batsmen in C. J. B. Wood, with the total at four runs. On Tuesday Leicestershire struggled against their fate, but although Knight and Y. F. S. Crawford played well, Whiuehead alone made a big score ; he was batting for a couple of hours for his 62 not out. Yorkshire went in again with a lead of 125, and for some time found in Gi 1 a bowler who was able to keep them very quiet. They lost half their wickets for 55 runs in an hour to Gill, who was bowling fast and making the ball get up sometimes. The sixth wicket fell at 8) and tden Lord Hawke and Kothery made a stand which quite altered the situation; it produced 76 runs. Gill was becoming tired, and no one else seemed capable of causing the Yorkshire captain any discomfort. When stumps were drawn the total was 210 for eight wickets. Lord Hawke being not out 61 and Ringrose not out 16. Yorkshire waBnow 335 runs on. Yesterday Lord Hawke again played fine cricket and succeeded in making his hundred, when he declared the innings closed. He was batting for two hours and a quarter. Leicester shire had to make 385 runs, and with four hours beforethem they succeeded inmaking a very honour able draw. Knight played a splendid innings. Y obksh ibe . Prichard delivered five no-balls.
