Cricket 1904

M a y 12, 1904. CRICKET. A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE. GAME. l l fJ bring about, And this is a matter over which captains and umpires have no control, for the wicket is not then in their possession. The wicket is prepared, it is then covered over until the stumps are pitched, and then at twelve o’clock the umpires step in. A comparatively newly adopted rule provides that the question of proceeding with play in uncertain light or the fitness of the wicket rests with the ciptains. Out here the captains usually delegate that power to the umpires, so it is a case of “ as you were.” Probably it was regretted during the Saturday afternoon of the fourth Test that the umpires had been given that power, for in the f'nal match at Mel bourne they were accompanied to the wickets by Noble and Warner. It is to be gathered therefrom that the captains on this occasion adhered to the law and had the umpires with them in the event of a difference of opinion as to whether play should proceed. It would not cause the least surprise if, in view of the act of the umpires at Sydney, the captains had decided to resume their control of the game in that respect. The objection to covering the wicket is that it furnishes the side winning the toss with a good wicket to start on, and anything that might come along for the loser of the toss. This strikes me as unfair, and rather than that I would leave the matter to chance .—Sydney Mail. PELHAM v. BELSIZE.—Played at Neasden on May 7. B e l s iz i . G. 8. F.
