Cricket 1903
O o t . 29, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 437 THE KENT TEAM IN AMERICA. THE COLTS’ (XIX.) MATCH. FIRST OP THE TOUR. Played on the Manheim Ground, Philadel phia on September 18 and 19. Kent won by eight wickets. The Kent team consisted of twelve for this match while their opponents numbered nine teen. Owing to heavy rain on the day before the match the wicket which had been selected could not be used, but a beginning was made on a new pitch at mid-day. Against the bowling of Blythe and Mason the Colts were quite unable to do themselves justice, and most of them seemedto lose their nerve, which under the circumstances was not very remark able. Against the Colts’ 79 Kent made 47 for two wickets. On the next day the Kent players made the most of their opportunities, hitting out well whenever there seemed a fair chance of scoring, and the result was a lead of 90. The second innings of the Americans was only noticeable for the sound batting of F. S. White, who met with very little assist ance, although Wallace played a plucky innings. The result was that the task set to Kent was very easy, and for the first time the Colts were beaten by a team from England. C olts of P hiladelphia . First innings. Second innings. F. S. ( secon d of t h e t o u r ). Played at Wissahickon Heights on Septem ber 25, 26 and 28. Kent won by seven wickets. This was a very interesting match all through, and when Kent were left on Satur day night with an innings to play and 191 runs to make, it seemed that their chances of success were small. Moreover there was heavy rain on the Sunday. But really brilliant play, full of resource, by Burnup and Mason brought about a well-earned victory. At the end of the first day Kent had put up 55 for the loss of two wickets against a total of 128 by Philadelphia. King played excellent cricket for his side, but Bradley, bowling very fast and well, was in great form, and very few men were at all comfortable with him. Seymour played a fine game for Kent on the next day, and Mason, who went in late owing to a dis located finger, showed remarkable skill and pluck in making his useful 19. King bowled with great effect. A fine partnership between King and Lester, producing 64 runs, was a noticeable feature in the Philadelphia second innings, which was, however, chiefly remark able for the splendid play of Lester, who, after taking some time to settle down, was at his very best. Unfortunately for his side he could get no one to stay with him. On the Monday, Kent, with 191 to make to win, lost two wickets for 47 and three for 95. Then Mason joined Burnup, who was play ing in beautiful form, and so freely did the two men bat that they hit off the runs by a quarter to five without being separated. K ent . First innings. C. J. At the end of the first day’s cricket in this match the homo team had reasonto congratu late themselves on the excellent fight that they were making, for against the Kent total of 202 their score was 83 for three wickets. For Kent, Baker, Burnup, and Mason played excellent cricket, and Bradley made a very useful 23 not out at the end of the innings. J. Poyer and J. Adam showed sound defence for New York, and the latter was only dis missed just before stumps were drawn. Things went wrong with the New Yorkers on the next day, and their innings, which begun so well, only produced 17 runs more against the bowling of Burnup and Baker. A fine innings of 46 by H. C. Stewart enabled Kent to declare with three wickets down in their second innings, and the home team were soundly beaten. In the second innings of Kent the catches made by Grahame, Bunce and Kelly were exceptionally good. Kelly, who captained the New York team, played several years ago for the Stoics. The Presi dent of the Metropolitan District Cricket League of New York, Mr. Arthur Rendle, offered cups for the best bowling and batting by members of the New York team, and these were won by Kelly and Adam.
