Cricket 1903
S ept . IT, 1903. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 42? THE HASTINGS WEEK. GENTLEMEN v. PLAYERS. Played at Hastings on September 10, 11 &12. Drawn. The weather, which has ruined so many matches this season, did not spare Hastings, and on the Thursday aad Friday nights there were gales which blew down tents, ruined the pitch, and generally upset the cricket. On the first day of Gentlemen v. Players it was cold, windy, dull, and at times almost dark ; it was a day taken out of early Novem ber by mistake. Both sides were strong, although neither of themwere at full strength. The Players had the good fortune to win the toss, and remained at the wickets until stumps were drawn, scoring 315 runs for the loss of six wickets. Every man who went in made double figures, while Hirst played an un finished innings of 91. For the first wicket Hayward and Vine put up 56 in an hour and ten minutes, the former making 36 of them. Up to lunch time the play was not at all interesting, and even Denton was content to play so cautious a game that he took seventy- five minutes over his 35 runs. He was dis missed with the total at 118, and was immediately followed by Vine, who had played with the utmoststeadiness fortwohours and a quarter. After lunch there was some delightful cricket shown by Hayes and Hirst, who came together with the score at 140 for four wickets. They put on 87 runs in fifty minutes, obtaining an absolute mastery over the bowling, and making the crowd enthu siastic, despite the cheerless weather. When stumps were drawn, Rhodes and Hirst were together, the former with 12 to his credit. The outlook on Friday morning was such as to make any committee of a cricket week resolve to take to marbles in the future. But after lunch things looked a little better, and the Players went on with their innings for twenty-five minutes, during which Hirst in creased his overnight total of 91 by 33, while Rhodes in the same period only made four. The innings was then declared closed. Hirst’s fine innings of 124 not out was put together in less than two hours. Before the Gentle men could go to the wickets a stormcame on, and there was no more play. The ground was so saturated on Saturday that no play was possible until half-past two, and then, after play had been in progress for ten minutes, there was a heavy shower, which seemed likely to put an end to the match. But a delay of twenty minutes was all that it entailed, and there were no further interrup tions. So well did G. W. Beldam and Maclaren play when the Gentlemen opened their innings, that before they were parted they had made it a moral certainty that the match would be drawn. They were together for about an hour, during which time they made 97 runs, Maclaren’s share of them being 68. The Lancashire captain was in brilliant form, and made the very most of the fact that the bowlers were handicapped by a wet ball. Shortly afterwards Beldam was dismissed for a most useful and well played 27, which he had made in 65 minutes. From this time until Lord Hawke and W. G. came together the bowlers had much the best of the situation, but the two veterans added 44 in forty minutes by some of the most attrac tive cricket seen during the match. P layers .
