Cricket 1903

S ept . 17, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 421 some time insensible; the blood gushed in torrents from his nose, and his face was much lacerated and bruised. As he revived, he complained of an acute pain in his left side, and had a trifling expectoration of blood. A surgeon being on the ground, he was now bled, and soon afterwards he was sufficiently recovered to walk from the field. The officer, though he received some severe contusions, was not so materially hurt.” On Barham Downs, near Canterbury, September 12 and 13. The Bridge Hill Club beat the Aldington Club. Amongst the curiosities of 1803 may be mentioned a match in Aldby Park, near Buttercrambe, in Yorkshire, on June 28th, between Buttercrambe (with Richard Darley, Esq.) and Bishop Wilton. Each side was to have three innings, and the former scored 28, 21 and 28 and the latter 34, 68 and “ no occasion.” On July 20th G-. Ollivor played at Lord’s single-handed against three of the M.C.C., the arrangement being that Ollivor was to have threeinningsto his opponents’ one in order to equalisematters. The match resulted as under:— G. O lliv o b . Second innings. 1 b Bentley ..3 18 b Bentley . 7 6 b B entley.. 5 First innings, 1st. b Bentley ... 2nd. b Bentley 3rd. b Eavers 25 15 3 P la y e rs o f th e M.C.C. First innings. Second innings. Richardson, b Ollivor... Bentley, b Ollivor EaverB, b Ollivor.......... 10 10 4 not out... 17 24 17 The Three winning by three wickets. Ollivor had two men to field. Matches arranged on the above principle were by no means uncommon in the olden days. Another single-wickctmatchwhich is worthy of record took place at Lord’s on July 27th, between three members of the Barton family and three of the Ollivor. W. B a rto n ’s HI. First innings. R. Barton’s ITT. winning by 80 runs. Betting six to four on the Bartons at start ing. The match, like the great majority of old-time contests, was stated to have been played for a considerable sum of money— 100 guineas. There can be no doubt that at one time great matches— e.g. those be tween Surrey and •England in 1803—were played for large sums, but as cricket increased in popularity games of quite minor import ance were advertised as involving heavy amounts in order to attract attention, and to this fact may be attributed the doubt which has occasionally been expressed concerning the genuineness of the sums for which noblemen were wont to arrange matches.
