T h e Young Players of Surrey who are to oppose Mr. W . T. Graburn’s X I . in Tom Sherman’s benefit match at Mitcham on September 19th, are as follows :—Mr. G. Roberts, Mr. G. Hudson, A. Craig, Turner, N. Jackson, W . Spring, Bert Stradwick (captain), A. Batt, J. Potter, W . Davis, and E. Ball. I t is with bated breath that I state that L . C. H . Palairet, the hero of a hundred magnificent performances in the cricket field, is playing crcquet this week in a tournament at Bath. R e p o r t s have aiisen that the London County Cricket Club would be dissolved after this season, but Dr. Grace states that there is no foundation for them, and that the club will arrange the usual series of matches next year. As regards the rumour that he will play for Gloucester shire next season, Dr. Grace states he has not been approached by the county cricket club on this point. O n Tuesday night at Hastings there was a great gale which brought down all the tents on the cricket ground, besides doing considerable damage. The gale was accompanied by heavy rain. T H E H A S T IN G S F E S T IV A L . LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE v. REST OF ENGLAND. Played at Hastings on September 7, 8 and 9. Lancashire and Yorkshire won hy 87 runs. Strong teams had been got together for this match by Mr. William Carless, the honorary secretary of the Week, but of those originally chosen 0. B. Fry cried off on Sunday night, while Jessop, Spooner, and Findlay were unable to play. Lord Hawke, for the ninth time in succession, won the toss, and thus did excellent service to his side, who, on a fairly easy wicket, ran up the useful score of 255, and got rid of Hayward before stumps were drawn, with the Rest of England score at 27. The best stand of the day was made by Tyldesley and Denton, who put on 100 runs together in the course of an hour and a quarter, by most attractive cricket. Rhodes made 31 in three quarters of an hour, and then remained at the wickets for twenty minutes more without increasing his total. The last wicket put on 32. On Tuesday it was soon found that Rhodes and Haigh knew how to make use of the wicket, hut Beldam kept up his end for an hour and ten minutes for a useful 18, and Ranjitsinhji played superb cricket for two hours and and twenty minutes. During his partner ship with Dr. Grace, who played exceedingly well, 50 runs were scored in half-an-hour, of which he claimed 28. Despite the fine play of these three men, the Rest had a balance of 82 against them, and before stumps were drawn this was increased hy another hundred runs, while only three men of the combined counties were out. Tyldesley and Denton again played a very fine game, and while they were together for an hour and five minutes put on 89 runs. Tyldesley was then caught at the wicket for a splendid 51. In the night there was a gale and heavy rain. All the tents were blown down and much damage was done to the wicket. The rain left off in the morning and the wicket dried in time for the game to be resumed at ten minutes past two o’ clock, when the counties continued their innings until they had added 25 runs to the total. Dentoncarried his bat for a beau tiful innings of 53. The Rest ofEngland, who had much the worst ofthe wicket in their first innings, nowhad hardly any chance of saving the match against such bowlers as Rhodes and Haigh, and although Hayward, Vine and J. Gunn all played a great game, the result was almost a foregone conclusion. L ancashire a n d Y o rksh ibe . First innings. Second innings. A. C.
