Cricket 1903

396 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S ept . 3, 1903. was caught in the slips, himself appealed to the umpire, not being convinced that the catch had been made. L a s t week Mr. Herbert Chipp, whose name must be well-known to thousands of cricketers, died suddenly at Ely of laryngitis and pneumonia as the result of a bicycle accident. In his early days he was a good cricketer, and without much doubt he would have been a county player if he had not practically abandoned the game for lawn tennis, at which he soon became one of the greatest experts. He was the author of a widely read book entitled “ Lawn Tennis Recollections,” and from May, 1897, to July, 1899, was the editor of Lawn Tennis. A m a t c h is to take place on Mitcham Green on Saturday, September 19th, for the benefit of Tom Sherman, the old Surrey cricketer. The sides will be captained by W. T. Graburn and Strud wick.
