Cricket 1903

366 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 20, 1903, YORKSHIRE v. ESSEX. AN EXCITING FINISH. Played at Sheffield on August 17, 18 and 19. Drawn. This was the last home match to be played by Yorkshire this sfa^on. OwiDg to the heavy rain which had fallen there was no play on Monday until half past three, when Yorkshire went in on a very slow wicket. On the who’e they did as well as could have been expected in maliirg 99 runs for the loss of six wicke‘s, for the pitch became more and more difficult. Brown played a reilly good innings for an hour and t *enty minutes. Ernest 8mith helped him to put on 36 runs in twenty-five minutes. After this partnership the bowleis took the upper h«nd. In cessant rain duiing Monday night left the wicket in such a state that there was no p ay on Tuesday, but great progress was made with the match yesterday, and Essex had the very narrowest escape. The re maining four Yorkshire wickets fell very quickly. After losirg Fane for a duck’s egg, 8ewell and Perrin dtd so well that before the next wicket fell the total was 64, Perrin, by beautiful cricket, having made 47 of them, although he had a hitter as his partner. But after this wickets fell fast, and at lunch time five men were out for 77. Buckenham and Mead afterwards m&de a very useful stand, and as events turned out prac ically saved E-sex from defeat. For when the Yorkehiremen went in again they made runs as quickly as possible, declared at the very first opportunity, and by splendid bowling and fielding g ot down eight Essex wickets before the match ended. There was only two hour’ * cricket at Chesterfield on Monday, during which Warwickshire scored 162 for the loss of six wi kets, which, a* the wicket wis very slow, was an excellent start. Willie Quaife, who went in first, was out for a duck’s egg, but a good stand was then made by Fishwick and Devey, producing 46 runs in 25 minutes. After this the bowlers met with considerable success, until Loveitt went in and played a good not out innings of 34. Devey was at ihe wickets for an hour and fifty-five minutes for his 66; he and Loveitt added 69 runs for the sixth wicket. L. G. Wright had not recovered sufficiently from his recent illness to be able to play for Derbyshire It r lined so hard on Monday night that it was impossible to play on Tue day, but the game was resumed yesterday at twenty minutes pasl twelve. Moorhouse hit finely and his partnership with Loveitt added 66 runs to the score. Both men left at the same total. Derbyshire went in a quarter of an hour before lunch and lost two wickets for three runs before the interval. Afterwards Lawton made some beautiful hits and was batting an hour and five minutes for his 48. Ollivierre and Needham played well but the tail did very little, although they managed to pave the follow on. Warwickshire made 13 for one wicketin their second innings and declared, but Derbyshire easily played out time. W arwickshire . There was no play in this match on Monday, and there was not the least chance of beginning the match on Tuesday, for the rain on the previous night was exceedingly heavy. Yesterday there was never any likelihood whatever that the game could be brought to a conclusion, and there was practically no iatere^t in the match. H ampshire .
