Cricket 1903

364 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 20, 1903. THE M.C.C. TEAM DAY BY DAY. There was no news to chronicle last wefk, but rumours and statements have again been to the fore. The following announcements, official and otherwise, have appeared in the morning and even ing daily papers since the last issue of Cricket :— Thursday, August 13. Mr. E. E. Foster has, at the request of the M.C.C., consented to undertake the office of financial manager of the cricket tour in Australia. Mr. J. A. Murdoch, the assistant secre tary of the M.C.C., will go as his assistant. Friday, August 14th. No news. Saturday, August 15th. Mr. C. B. Fry has declined the invita tion of the M.C.C. to go to Australia, and the team is therefore much the poorer. Mr. Fry wrote last night to heid- quarters, giving his decision. The delay in his reply was due to the special desire of the M.C.C. that he should not give a final answer so long as there was any possible chance of his going. The names of Knight (Leicestershire) and Hayes have been mentioned in con nection with the team. Sunday, August 16th. It is certain that John Gunn will fill the vacant place in the team. Monday, August 17th. The announcement that John Gann will be asked to go is at least premature. Tuesday, August 18th. J. Douglas has been asked to fill the place left vacant by Fry. J. Douglas has not been asked. No invitation has been issued to any one to fill Fry’s placa. It is not proposed to take more than fourteen men. There is a rumour that a certain well- known amateur, name not mentioned, is to be asked to go. His name is not Douglas. Knight has been invited and has accepted. Wednesday, August 19th. Knight has not been invited, but the Leicestershire committee on being asked if they would allow him to go, wired that they would. Knight has been invited, and has de finitely accepted.
