356 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. A ug . 20, 1903. scored from the bat:— F. Heasman, b J. Markwick ........................ 0 H. Poste, c and b R. Smith................. ......... 0 O. Wratten, whose name is found in the above score, has been captain of the Isfield C.C. for thirty-two years. Is this a retdfrd ? Mention of length of service rendered by a cricketer reminds me that William Tunks, of St. Leonards, New South Wales, was Mayor of that borough for eighteen consecutive years. He was a big, powerful man, and in the cricket field wielded a bat with an iron handle. 'In St. Leonards Park a handsome marble fountain has been erected in recog nition of his mayoral services. For many yeats Mr. Tunks also occupied a seat in the Legislative Assembly. I shall be glad to hear wLeth^r any cricketer can claim to have exceeded Mr. Wratten’s term of captaincy. I wish space permitted me to do justice to “ Annals of Lord’s and History of the M.C.C.,” which Mr. Alfred D. Taylor has written and Mr. J. W. Arrowsmith, of Bristol, has just published at the non-pro- hibitive price of three-and-six. The story of the formation and development of the club is told as fully as existing records will permit, but on reading the pages one cannot but deplore the damage done eighty years ago when the old pavilion and so many documents of absorbing interest were burnt. The book, although purely historical, contains many anecdotes of famous men of previous genera tions, and will prove a capitalmeans whereby to pass some of the wet days, of which we are experiencing so many this summer. Mr. Taylor tells his story in a very interesting manner, and has earned the gratitude of all lovers of the game for the carefully-compiled and well-illustrated volume which he has just given to the public. It is but necessary to add that the book is bound well and in an attractive manner to thoroughly convince readers that it is well worth the moderate price asked for it. P.S.—Since writing the above notes I learn that the place in the M.C.C. team un filled by C. B. Fry have been offered to, and accepted by, Knight, of Leicestershire. His inclusion in the side is bound to strenghten the batting considerably, but one cannot but regret that roomcannot also be found for John Gunn, who at present is in such remarkably fine form both with bat and ball. There cannot be much doubt that if a decision is come to to send out a fifteenth man, John Gunn will receive the invitation to make the journey. KENSINGTON PARK v.
