Played at Hawera on December 30 and 31. After a vi'it to the famous Hot Lakes and other lions of the neighbourhood of Auckland, the team went by boat to New Plymouth, and thence by train to Hawera, where the next match was to be played. On a slow wicket the local team began well and had nearly 100 on the scoring board before the second wicket fell, F. H. Robertson playing a very good and plucky game indeed. But there was a lamentable falling off afterwards on a drying wicket. The Englishmen could not do very much in the way of making runs, for the bowling and fielding were good and thejwicket difficult, but they made enough runs to enable them to win in an innings. J. W . Williams, an old Etonian, resident at Auckland, played for Lord Hawke’s team in the absence of Whatman and Stanning, the latter having had a slight sunstroke. S outh T aranaki . FOURTH OF THE TOUR. Played at New Plymouth on January 1 and 2. Lord Hawke’s team won by an innings and 103 runs. It was arranged that for this match eigh teen New Zealanders should bat, and fifteen field, but the New Zealand captain hardly made the best use of his extra men. Bosan quet, Burnup and Taylor were all in great form, and nearly all the rest of the team made runs. The bowling of the visitors was much too good for the home team in the first innings, but they did very much better in the second, and some of them, notably Steele and Perham, would probably with practice become fine cricketers. Braund, who played for Taranaki, is said to be a cousin of the Somersetshire professional. The match was played on matting over clay, with grass in the outfield. L obd H a w ke ’ s T eam . 45 C. J. Played on the Wanganui College Ground on January 3 and 5. Lord Hawke’s team won by 8 wickets. The "batting of the Rev. J. Marshall and G. Marshall was one of the most interesting features of the match. Logan and Sleeman also played well, and, indeed, the team on a whole was strong. The visitors, on a crumb ling wicket, were not in good form, Thompson alone playing well, hut Hargreave and Bosanquet were both good for the local men in the second innings. On the following day an exhibition match was played, Bosanquet scoring 103 for Lord Hawke’s team, and the Rev. J. Marshall 102not out, and G. Marshall 84 not out for the local team. The English men only used their change bowlers, but the Marshalls played uncommonly well. W anoani . First innings. 8eoond innings. H. B. Cave, b Hargreaves .. 0 * G.
