Cricket 1903
350 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 13, 1903. match, Sarray continued their innings yesterday on a soft and fairly easy wicket. Dowson and Walker took the score to 215 before the latter was out. the partnership haviD g put on 75 runs ia an hour. Then DowBon and Lockwood put on 66 runs in fifty-five minutes, and when Dowson had made his 100 the innings w<s closed. Dowson was batting for three hours, and had p’ayed an exceedingly good inniDgs, tempered by a little luck in the way of chances. Derbyshire had ten minutes batting before lunch. Afterwards Needham and Cadman played well, but a follow on was necessary, although it was always pretty evident that the visitors would easily play out time. S u r r e y . Play only lasted for three hours and a half on Monday in this match, for owing to heavy rain it was not possible to begin the game until half-past two after an early lunch. Hut Kent made the best use of their opportunities and by the end of the day scored 269 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. The most noticeable feature of the cricket was the fine inniogs of 106 played by K. L. Hutchings, who did not let the grass grow under his feet. His hitting was very powerful and well timed. Hi* flrst fifty was made in forty minutes and his second fifty in thirty-five minutes, while among his hits were no fewer than nineteen 4’s. Mason also played a splendid innings, and hi« E artnership with Hutchings produced 163 runs in an our and twenty-five minutes, Hutchings, who went in next to him, baing the first to go. Rain began to fall in the early morning on Tuesday, and it was still falling when the time came to resume the game. A t two o’clock it w.s decided to wait until the morrow. Kent at once declared yesterday, and Somersetshire easily saved the follow-on, Braund and Phillips batting very well indeed. There was now no hope of finishing the match. K rnt . K. L.
