THE AUCKLAND MATCH. SECOND OF THE TOUR. Played at Auckland on December 19, 20 and 22. Lord Hawke’s team won by an innings and 129 runs. This was the first match played in New Zealand by the team, the only other match being that at San Francisco, already reported in Cricket. Without much time for practice after their arrival at Auckland the English men, aided by an inordinate amount of luck in the field, made a good score in the first innings. 13urnup played particularly well, while Fane met with a good deal of fortune in his fine innings of 82. The local team had to bat under great difficulties, for in showery weather the wicket had been easy while the Englishmen batted, but had become exceedingly difficult when the New Zealanders’ turn came. As a consequence of this the batting was disappointing, and Thompson and Buraup in the first innings and Dowson in the second had things almost their own way with the ball. Stemson, a right-hand bowler of moderate pice, bowled much better than his analysis would seem to show, although as it was it was by no means bad. As the match ended before luncheon on the third day, a scratch match was arranged, Auckland making 60 and Lord Hawke’s team 230. L ord H aw P. F. Warner, c Neill, b N B.
