Cricket 1903

338 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 13, 1903. been sufficiently good to justify his inclu sion in an England team. To the best of my belief, his name has never even been mentioned in connection with any of the England teams. But for all that he is a fine cricketer, able to play a defensive or aggressive game as the occasion requires, with plenty of confidence in himself, without which a cricketer can never be really great. He is never frightened out, and never discouraged because the game is going against his Bide; in fact he is never more likely to make runs than when the odds against his doing so are great. Nor does the quality of the bowl ing seem to make as much di£ferenc 0 to him as it does to many other tine players. In the greatest test of all—against the Australians—he has never made any very big scares, but he has made useful ones, and has hardly played often enough against them for any judgment to be formed as to whether their style of bowl ing is much more puzzling to him than that of English bowlers, with whom he is generally on excellent terms. He does not seem to be inconvenienced by one kind of bowling more than another; he makes runs against fast and slow and medium, against left as well as right hand. His cheerfulness under all kinds of conditions is proverbial, and this often carries him through difficulties whenother men fail. He is a pretty bat to watch even when he is playing a slow game, and his defence is sound. It is quite on the cards that on the fast and easy Aus tralian wickets he may do even better than he has done in England. Bat it is to be hoped that he will not allow the fascinations of journalism and book- writing to interfere either with his cricket or his duties as captain, for that way lies danger. Mr. Warner has travelled far and wide as a ciicketer, and he seems to enjoy playing in hot countries. Most of the cricket which he has played abroad has been against teams which were much weaker than those which he accompanied, but it has very often happened that when by chance one of these teams has got into a tight corner, he has done much to help it out of its difficulties. With touring teams he has visited the West Indies, the United States aud Canada, Oporto, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. He has written two books describing these tours, and it may be taken for granted that he will write a third after his next visit to Australia. L^t us hope that in this he will be able to relate as many pleasing exper'ences, aud to chronicle as few defeats as he has met with in his other tours. W . A. Bi.TTESWOB.TH. SOUTHGATE v.
