Cricket 1903

316 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 30, 1903. YORKSHIRE v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE- Played at Sheffield on July 27, 28 and 29. Yorkshire won by an innings and 183 runs. For 1his match the place of F. 8. Jackson was taken by 'Wilkinson, while Hunter stood down on account of an injury to one of his hands. On the Gloucestershire side E. W . Eice made a reappearance, but Eoberts was unable to play because of a strain. The early morning on Monday was fine, but at about eleven o’clock rain began to fall, and as it continued without intermission play was abandoned for the day. It was possible to begin at the usual time on Tuesday. A great deal depended on winniDg the toss, and unfortunate Gloucestershire lost it, with the result that before the wicket became very diffi cult Yorkshire ran up a score of 284. The best and highest innings was the 83 by Denton, who was, however, missed when he had only made six, a mistake which told very heavily on Gloucestershire. The first wieket partnership tetween Brown and Tunnicliffe produced 63 runs, while Hirst and Denton while together for forty minutes hit up 68. The score at lunch time was 222 for seven wickets, and the innirgs finished at half-past three, the rate of scoring throughout having been deci dedly good. Lord Hawke played a very useful innings of 36. Like four other members of the team he fell a victim to Jessop, who bowled accu rately and with success. The Gloucestershire first innings was disappointing in the extreme. Brownlee and Spry alone could make double figures, but the latter, as in the match last week against Notts, played excellent cricket. As Gloucestershire were 169 runs behind they were made to follow on, and this time they fared even wor^e thin before. When stumps were drawn the total was 17 for eight wickets, and a very few minutes sufficed to take the other two yesterday morning. Y orkshire . HAMPSHIRE. Arranged to be played at Leyton on July 27, 28 and 29. Abandoned without a ball being bowled. There have been no matches at Leyton for more than a month, and it was consequently a great disap pointment when it was found that no play was possible on the first day of the Hampshire match. Hampshire were giving a trial to Langford, an Isle of Wight professional, while A. J. L. Bill was absent. Bo much additional rain fell in the night that the turf was in too sodden a condition for play at the usual time, and it was decided to wait until after lunch. But at about two o’clock another downpour caused an abandonment for the day. Flay was out of the question yesterday. E ssex : C. J. Kortright (capt.), A. P. Lucas, F. L. Fane, P. Perrin, and C. McGahey, with Sewell (E. H. D.), Buckenham, Bussell (T. M.), Young, Mead, and another. H ampshire : E. M. Sprot (capt.), D. A. Steele, E* G. Bead, and F. H. Bacon, with Llewellyn, Webb> Stone, Bowell, Soar, Smoker, and Langford. THE GENTLEMEN OF PHILADELPHIA. THE SUSSEX MATCH. ( t h i k t e e n t h o p t h e t o u r .) Arranged to be played at Brighton on July 27, 28 and 29. Abandoned without a ball being bowled. As both teams had to undertake a long journey after this match, it was arranged to begin at eleven o’clock on Monday and to finish at four on Wednesday afternoon. But, j ust before the time for commencing, a steady rain began to fall, and no play could take place. Bain fell heavily during the night and also on Tuesday morning, and it was decided after lunch that tha game must be given up for the day. Yes terday the match was given up. SU383X : G. Brann, C. B. At the usual hour on Monday, Kent, having lost the toss, went into the field, but before the game was begun a heavy shower drove them to shelter. At a quarter to one they again appeared, and for about a quarter of an hour some sort of cricket was played. Again the players had to take refuge in the pavilion, thi * time for over half an hour. On the next occasion that they tried their fortune play lasted for ten minutes, after which there was four hours’ heavyrain, which caused play to be given up for the day as a hopeless business. While play was in progress, Sur rey scored 37 runs for the loss of Holland. Hayward was not out 14, and Hayes not out 15. On the next morning rain, after keeping off throughout the night, began to fall at about eleven o’clock, and four hours later it was decided to wait until eleven o’clock yes terday, but it was impossible to play then, and the match was abandoned.
