Cricket 1903
J u l y 23, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 295 LONDON COUNTY v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Crystal Palace on July 16, 17 & 18. London County won by an innings and 31 runs. Although there were frequent interruptions from rain on the first d«y of this match, a strong batting team of London Couuty scored 263 runs for the lots of five wickets. The Doctor himself was unsuccess ful, but E A. Eeldam and Braund put on 86 for the second wicket. Poidevin came on and played a pretty game while Beldam, who was making his first appearance in first-class cricket, greatly impressed the critica by his good play ; bis innings of 62 lasted f >r 90 minutes. Robeon and W. Smith \ oth helped Poidevin, the latter carrying his bat for 73. He only added three to this on the next morning, bnt W. Smith, who was not out 38 overnight, was in great form, and although no one could stay with him long, he managed to make 123 runs out of 190 while he was at the wickets after batting for an hour and three- quarters ; his partnership with Poidevin had produced 109 runs. The Derbyshire batting was very dis appointing at first, and half the wickets were down for 45. But Else and Lawton then put on 77, the latter making his runs very quickly by plucky cricket. Afterwards Curgenven, Warren and Hulme all did so well that it began to look as if the fol'ow-on might be saved. But when the innings ended Derbyshire were 183 runs behind, and the Doctor put them ii again, with the result that by the end of the day six wickets were down for 115, Lawton again playing a fine innings. Just before the end of ihe day Cran fleld, in tiying to stop a hard hit by Ollivierre, damaged his bowling hand severely and had to retire. On Saturday it seemed quite on the cards that Derby shire would escape defeat, bo heavy w as the rain, but it w as found practicable to resume the game at half- paet two, and in half-an-hour the remaining four wickets had fal!en.
