Cricket 1903

J uly 16, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 285 would doubtless have done as much if they had won the toss. The chief attraction of the innings was the beautiful cricket played by Fishwick, who, in the course of two hours and three-quarters, made 106; hitherto he had not been seen at his best this season. Quaife again played a most valuable innings, and at present he seems to be at least as good as he ever was; he was at the wickets for two hours and twenty minutes. Towards the end of the day F. R. Loveitt, the old Rugby footballer, who has not assisted the county for some little time, made 50 not out, although he was not at all comfortable at first; while Charles worth played a good innings of 41. On Tuesday only six more runs were added to the total. A fine catch at cover-point disposed of Sewell, after he had made 23 out of 29 for the first Essex wicket, and as Perrin badly ran himself out soon afterwards. McGahey felt that no risks ought to be taken, and contented himself with leaving most of the scoring to Fane, who was in excellent form. Fane was batting for two hours and five minutes for his 73, and McGahey two hours and a-quarter for his 87—an innings which must have interested W. G. Quaife and Kinneir a good deal. After this Essex did badly until Kortright and Russell put a better appearance on the game. At five o’clock play ceased for the day owing to rain, Essex, with two wickets in hand, having made 230. Kortright was not out 31 and Young not out 11. Yesterday Essex just failed to save the follow-on, and ona wicket which had suffered severely from heavy rain in the night, they struggled in vain to stave off defeat. W a r w ic k s h ir e . T. S. Two big innings were played during the day, the first by Brown, who only missed his hundred by four after batting for an hour and forty minutes, and the second by Hirst, who just before play ended for the day reached his hundred with a short run ; he had then been at the wickets for an hour and ten minutes. The total was 396 for four wickets, Smith, with 31, being the other man who was not out. On Tuesday it was only possible, owing to rain, to play for about seventy minutes, but the Yorkshiremen made the best use of their time, increasing their total by 111 runs for two more wickets. Hirst’s fine inn iegs of 142 lasted altogether for an hour and fifty minutes. Lord Hawke was in good form, and when p!ay ended he and Rhodes were both notout 24. The total was now 417 for six wickets, and when rain finally stopped play Lord Hawke declared the innings closed. It may be noted that the only extra in the long innings was a 1»g-bye. It rained heavily in the night and Somerset were hard put to it to save the game. Rut it was not possible to begin until ten minutes to one, and by tteady and careful play Somerset just managed to bring about a draw. Hedley, b Y o r k s h ir e . YORKSHIRE y. SOMERSET. Played at Bradford on July 13, 14 and 15. Drawn. So often have the Somerset men played magnificent cricket against Yorkshire even when the latter were deemed almost invincible, that under ordinary cir cumstances this match would have been regarded with the very greatest interest by the cricket world. But while the Yorkshiremen were nearly at full strength, Somerset had to do without several of their best men, and the chances that they would be successful were very small indeed. Lord Hawke re turned to the Yorkshire eleven after being absent for a month, and his side owed a great deal to him for winning the toss, since throughout the first day the weather was so showery that the bowlers were nearly always handicapped by having to use a wet ball. Under these circumstances the Yorkahiremen were in Smith, c and b Cran field ........................51 Lord Hawke, not out 24 Rhodes, not ou t.........24 Leg-bye .......... 1 Total (6 wkts) *417 Brown, c Robson ....................96 Tunnicliffe.c Johnson, b Cranfield .............11 Denton,bLee,b Robson 47 Wilkinson, c Lee, b Robson ....................21 Hirst, c Johnson, b Cranfield..................142 Haigh, Hunter and Ringrose did not tat. * Innings declared closed.
