( fou rteen th of t h e tour .) Played at Aligarh on January ‘23 and 24. Drawn. This was practically a one day match, for owing to heavy rain no play was possible on the second day. The wicket was bad, and the native team did very well indeed with the hall, getting the Authentics out twice in the same day, Chinnery alone making any effective resistance to the howling of Ali Hasan and Shafkat. The former has a big reputation in India as a howler of big breaks which come very rapidly off the pitch. The native team could make nothing of Simpson-Hayward’s lobs. It will bo noticed that Ahsan-ul-Hak played for the College and made top score. D ear S ir , — Sad is it to find that the authorities at cricket are beginning to suggest and discuss that a further alteration in the size of the stumps is perhaps necessary, the last increase having taken place, I believe, as far back as 1817. If, however, only the wickets or “ pitches ” as they are now called be moderately prepared as formerly on good old English turf and grass, and not by over-preparation ruined as they now are and turned into adamantine over-rolled billiard tables, so easy for batsmen to perform on, the result will be fewer runs, while the equality between the batsman and bowler, so long lost and regretted by real lovers of our great game, would be restored everywhere. To alter the size of the stumps now would cause grief to many I feel sure. “ A m O ld H arrovian .”
