Played at Old Trafford on July 9, 10 and 11. Somerset won by 182 runs. There was nothing in the early stages of thismatch to point to an easy victory by Somerset, and it was not until nearly the end of the second day that Lancashire seemed likely to have a difficult t isk to win. On the first day Lancashire scored 169 for five wickets against 177 Dy Somerset, who were again without L. C. H. Palairet and S. M. J. Wojds. Braund was the only Somerset man who made over fifty, and Spooner the only Lancashire man to do so. "When stumps were drawn A. H. Hornby was not out 9 and Cuttell not out 24. On Friday Hcrnby played a beautiful innings, and of the 86 runs which were added to the overnight total in the first hour his share was 72. Altogether his inni' gs of 81 lasted for eighty minutes. The tail did very little, but for all that Lancashire had a leal of 68. In the Somerset second innings so many men did well that by the end of the day the county had a lead of 224 runs with three wickets still in hand, F. M. Lee being not out 46. On Saturday Lee played splendid cricket, and as he received valuable help from Newton, Somerset ended their innings with a lead of 293. To make these runs proved to be far too hard a task for Lan cashire, who found Braund and Cranfield both in great form. S o m e r set . First innings. 0. M. The visitors were unfortunate enough in this match to lose tte services of their chief bowler, J. B. Ki'ig, who strained his side after his second over. This loss handicapped them sadly, but they con tributed to their own misforluaes by the weakness of their batting. In the flrst innings they could only make 112, and although they seemed to play Hargreave easily enough they could make nothing of Moorhouse and Field. Ia the absence of King, Crfgar came to the front with the ball, and in takirg eight wickets for 86 he did a brilliant performance. Fishwick, Charlesworth and Rotherham, the old Uppinghamian, all played very attractive cricket for Warwickshire, who on the flrst innings had a lead of 41. Before stumps were drawn the Americans knocked off this lead for the loss of two wickets, and were ten runs on. Sharpless was not out 21, and Bohlen not out 25. On the next day Bohlen play, d a spltnaid erame, but received very little assistance. Thanks chiefly to him the visitors were able to give Warwickshire the task of making 161, but as King was unable to bowl for ihem they cannot have had much hope of pulling off the match. As it happened, Warwickshire knocked off the runs without any difficulty at all. G en tlem en o f P h il a d e l p h ia . First innings. Second innings. N. Z.
