Cricket 1903
276 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 16, 1903. OBITUARY. J. N. T o nge . Mr. J. N. Tonge was for a short period a useful member of the Kent eleven. Bom on July 9th, 1865, he came into notice in 1834 by an innings of 110 for the Second Eleven of the county against Gravesend, and it was on the ground of the latter club that he in the same year received his introduction to county cricket in a match with Derbyshire. He was bowled by Shacklock for 15, and had the satisfaction of seeing his county win with an innings to spare. In 1885 he ran up 160 not out for Kent Second Eleven against F. A. Mackinnon’s team, and appeared in four matches for the county, making two fine scores of 53 against Hampshire, and 54 against Middlesex, going in first each time. In 1886 he made 40, run out, against York shire at Sheffield when opposed to Emmett, Peate, and Bates, but otherwise was scarcely a success, his average in county matches only reaching 9 per inn ings. The Jubilee year saw him make a good start with scores of 40 a d 23 v. M.C.C. at Lord’s, while in county matches he had the useful average of 15. His best innings were 39 run out against Sussex, 32 and 35 against Notts at Trent Bridge, and 38 against Gloucestershire at Clifton. A fine score of 60 against Lan cashire in 1888 was the culminating point of his career with Kent, for whom he rarely appeared in after years. J.B.P. BERKSHIRE v. MONMOUTHSHIRE.
