ETON v. WINCHESTER. Played at Eton on June 24 and 25. Eton won by 43 runs. In this match each side had four members of last year’s eleven, and five out of the eight distinguished themselves. Nicholls played a particularly good innings for Eton, showing great powers of hitting. Williams also played a good innings, and the tail, in the persons of Boles and Tod, aid well. Evans bowled finely, although he was not on for very long. The innings of Winchester was only noticeable for the batting of Weatherby and Morris, and the good bowling of Scholfleld and Tod. When stumps were drawn Eton had made 9 runs in their second inniogs, and were 54 runs on. On the second and last day most of the batsmen with the highest reputations did nothing cf note, but Crankshawe, Campbell and Aspinall all played well. In the end Winchester had to make 218 to win, and although Weatherby played a brilliant innings, which almost gave victory to his side, there were only two other men. A very even first day’s cricket left Westminster with a lead of 20 with all their wickets in hand. The batting was pretty good all round on both side, and Crowe, Logan, Walters, Fleuret, Branston, Payne, Bence-Pembroke and Growse all distinguished them selves. On Saturday Westminster, thanks chiefly to fine cricket by Crowe, Gardner ana Walters did well enough to have good hopes of victory, for they were able to give Charterhouse the task of making 196 to win. But a splendid innings by Bence-Pembroke upset all calculations, and as he received valuable assistance from Cripps, Charterhouse gained an easy victory. Pembroke made his 103 in two hours and a half. W estminster . First innings. Second innings. A. T. Coleby, c Buchanan, b c Buchanan, b Branston ........................... 3 Allen ...... 5 G. L.
