WARWICKSHIRE v. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Birmingham on June 22, 23 and 24. Drawn. At the end of the first day’s play each side had scored just over two hundred runs, but whereas Derbyshire were all out the home team had only lost half their wickets. For once L. G. Wright failed to distinguished himself, being dismissed without scoring, and when the Derbyshire total was 13 two more wickets were down. After this, however, Cad- man, Warren, and Lawton played (rood cricket, and were responsible for 161 out of the total of 188 runs made from the bat. The partnership between Cad- man and Warren lasted anhour and produced 98 runs. Warren’s fine innings (the highest of his career for the county) of 89 included eleven 4’s. Field worked great destruction among the tail, his last four wickets only coating 13 runs; he got rid of Lawton, El is and Morton in four balls. For Warwickshire Byrne and Quaife played good and pleasing cricket, putting on 89 in an hour and five minutes. Quaife made his runs very much quicker than usual, only beirg at the wickets for an hour and five nr'nutes for his 53. Towards the end of the day Moorhouee, Lilley and Charlesworth all did well. Moorhouse on Tuesday morning brought his score to 48, and Charlesworth and Devey both played good cricket, but at the end of the innings Warwickshire only had a leal of 77. The second innings of Derbyshire was chiefly remark able for the sp endid tatting of L. G. Wright, *ho scored much faster than bis companions, who, although several of them made useful scores, could not make enough runs to give much hop* of victory. But Wiignt obtained a complete mastery over the bowling, and his inning* of 133 was that of a great cricke:er. It lasted for three hours and a half, and included seventeen 4’s. At the end of the day Derbyshire, with three wickets in h ind had a lead of 222 runs, which they inoreased to 267 yesterday. Soon after the Warwickshire innings began rain interrupted play, but afterwards Kioneir and W. G. Quaife played splendid crioket, and before they were parted they had made a draw nearly secure, though there was not time for victory. W hen they were parted the other men who batted simply played for a draw, but it was a pretty close thing at the end, and with a little luck Derbyshire might have won. DE&BY8HIBE. First innings. L. It was only a very weak team which appeared against London County on their first visit to Glouces tershire, for Jessop, Board and Thomas were all absent. Dr. Grace had got together a pretty strong side, which, however, on the first day’s play had by no means the beat of the game. The Doctor is a little fond of trying experiments in his more mature age, and despite several lessons which he has received of late years, he seems to enjoy putting his opponents in when he wios the toss. At Gloucester this manoeuvre did not promise well at the end of the day’s play, for while Gloucestershire had scored 251, the visitors had lost Dr. Grace and G. W. Beldam for 54. The home team did not begin at all well, and at lunch time half the wickets were down for 111, but then Fowler and Romans put on 52 in just over half an hour, and Romans and Spry, in the same time, made 78, all three men hitting pretty hard. On Tuesday Poidevin again showed that he has completely got into the form which made him so well known m Australia, and his 67 was au inLings worthy tf the highest praise. Braund also played fine cricket, and Llewellyn made a useful score. But the surprise of the innings was the batting of C. Kobson, who, un fettered by the cares of captaincy, was in great form ; he treated the Gloucestershire bowling with the utmost vigour, and there are not many cricketers in Hampshire who could have played a better innings. Gloucestershire had to make 87 before drawing level, and began well enough with Wrathall and E. Barnett, and afterwards Langdon and Fowler had a long and productive partnership, so that when stumps were drawn it was anybody’s game. But the innings was soon brought to an end yesterday, the last five wickets only adding 51 to the total. London County were now left to make 194, and, thanks chiefly to fine cricket by Poidevin and Wood, they easily accom plished their task. G loucestershire .
