The cover is exceedingly neat and yet attractive, the photographic reproduc tions, of which there are many, are clearly printed, and the typo leaves nothing to be desired. The illustrations are not confined to cricket scenes, but also represent the scenery of New Zealand through which the team passed. Of the author’s share in the book it is not possible to speak so highly. In his private capacity Mr. Warner is known to possess a keen sense of humour, and to be a student of human nature, and it is accord ingly strange that he so seldom seems to find anything of special interest to put in his books. Once, and once only, is the reader led to expect ananecdote. After a reference to ex traordinary decisions by umpires, Mr. Warner says, “ There was a case once” —and then dashes to the ground the reader’s hopes by adding “ but that is another story.” For the rest he describes very briefly each match of the tour, while most of the remainder of the book is taken up by comments on the scenery through which the team passed. In one chapter, however, he gives his impressions of New Zealand cricket, and these are naturally of considerable value. It is interesting to note that he expresses astonishment that the rules governing cricket in Australia differ in some respects from those in vogue at home. With regard to the financial part of the tour, Mr. Warner says, “ We had not one iota of interest in the gates. The New Zealanders and Australians paid our expenses, and a fee to the professionals, and then took all the gate money. Not one penny of money, with the exception of a cheque from the New Zealand Cricket Council for our railway tickets across America, ever passed through my hands or the hands of any other amateur member of the side.” Many of Mr. Warner’s admirers will be pleased to find that he has entirely discarded the system of calling the members of the team by their nicknames. The book contains a comprehensive index. •Cricket Across the Seas. By P. F. London, Messrs. Longmans, Green 8c Co., : noster Row. Illustrated. 6a. net. W-trner. 9, Pater- ARTI3TS v.
