Cricket 1903
2 0 2 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 11, 1903. the seacon will give general satisfaction to those interested in Surrey cricket. The short trial he had as acting captain was sufficient to show that he had in him most of the qualifications for the position. Considering too the circumstances under which he undertook it he is entitled to the hearty thanks of all Surrey men. The improved cricket shown by the team in the last few matches, one may fairly hope, is only an earnest of the success in store for his captaincy. He is, I think I am right in saying, the youDgest of the first class county captains, being a few months the junior of Mr. A. £ . Lawton, Derbyshire’s skipper. W i t h W. L. Foster just back from Somaliland, his brother R. E. available and G. H. Simpson-Hayward in England agaia after his Indian trip, Worcester shire ought to have a good all-round side in August. Their recant victory over Warwickshire at Worcester showed that they have seiiously to be reckoned with, even at the moment when they have not been particularly well represented. Cuffe, the Australian cricketer who has started to qualify, this season, scored an innings of nearly 200 for the second eleven against the second eleven of War wickshire at Whitsuntide. As an all round cricketer he should be of great use to them presently. A c o r r e s p o n d e n t writes:— “ In Gossip last week you refer to the great technical accuracy of an otherwise excellent cricket picture in Punch. But why is Campbell- Bannerman in the pavilion, and not in the field ? Is he damaged or sulking in his tent like Achilles, and letting some body field substitute for him P The error, if such it is, was pointed out to me by a lady, which shows that all ladies are not ignorant of cricket.” Possibly Sir Henry has come in to take off his coat, but cannot make up his mind to do so. ------ C o n g r a t u l a t io n s to Mr. E. I. M. Barrett, the Hampshire cricketer, on bis marriage on Saturday last at Southamp ton, to Miss Winifred Harriet Wall. M e s s e s .
