Cricket 1903

J u n e 11, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 195 BUSSEY’S BUSSEY’S AT THE SIGN OF THE WICKET. B y F . 8 . A shlby -G o o pir . The cricket of the past week has been most interesting, but pressure on space will not admit of more than passing reference to any of the most notable performances. The experience of Yorkshire at the hands of Mid dlesex and Sussex, at Lord’s and Bradford respectively, has done much to increase the interest in the county championship, although it is impossible for one not to sympathise with the north-countrymen in having Hirst, Brown and Tunnicliffe on the injured list. The absence of Hirst means a sad loss for the county, as on more than one occasion he had given proof of being in excel lent all-round form this season. Middlesex and Sussex, the former especially, are doing capitally, and a large crowd should be present next week when the two sides meet at Hove. Hearne is bowling in quite his old form, and Killick, by his analyses against Somerset and Yorkshire, leads one to suppose that he could be used as a bowler to better advantage in the future than he has been in the past. (Not the least remarkable thing in connection with last week’s match at Hastings between Sussex and Somerset was that there were 74 extras in the four innings, despite the fact that such capable wicket-keepers as Butt and Martyn officiated). Fry’ s great innings of 234, in which he played more carefully than usual, is one of the largest ever scored against Yorkshire bowling, being exceeded only by the 318 not out by W. G. for Gloucestershire at Cheltenham in 1876, the 273 by Hayward for Surrey at the Oval in 1899, the 268 by E. G. Wynyard for Hampshire at Southampton in 1896, and the 243 not out by A. J. Webbe for Middlesex at Huddersfield in 1887. It may be pointed out that (i.) T. H. Fowler and Wrathall made 277 for the first wicket of Gloucestershire v. London County last week at the Crystal Palace; that (ii.), W. G. in the same match scored 150, and took part in two three-figure stands, adding 124 with Poidevin, and 122 (according to the score-card, but 121 as reported) with J. H. Douglas; that (iii.) H. A. Arkwright, who obtained eight wickets in an inn ings for 40 runs for M.C.C. and Ground against Oxford University, is qualified for Essex and is but thirty years of age, that (iv.) Blythe and Seymour are to be congratu lated for their good work against Lancashire, that (v.) Richardson is bowling very well just now, that (vi.) on Saturday last J. Gunn and Hallam bowled unchanged for over three hours againstJEssex at Trent Bridge, and that (vii.) Caffe and Solly were the only bowlers tried, whilst Cambridge University scored 208 for one wicket against Worcestershire on the same day. LUDGROVE (1st XI.) v.
