Cricket 1903

178 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 4, 1903. matches at the Oval, Captain Walton and I bowled nearly clean through the two innings. He was in magnificent form, and we had the ball mounted and gave it to him.” “ Who succeeded your brother as secre tary ? ” “ Captain W. H. Eccles, who carried on the work for two or three years. He in his turn was succeeded by tbe Hon. W. H. North ; ultimately Mr. Clement Booth became secretary. When he gave up the office, which would be about 1874 or 1875, the club practically lapsed, al though it was never actually broken up. About the following year, Dr. Russell Bencraft and other enthusiastic cricketers, such as Mr. A. H. Wood and Col. Fel lowes, toik the affairs of the club in hand. Dr. Benc-aft first had as assistants Mr. G. K. Grierson and Col. Fellowes, but in a few months we moved to the new ground; in 1885 Dr. Bencraft became sole secretary. Everybody knows that he carried the work up to last year, when Mr. Bacon was appointed secretary, but the Doctor still continues hon. secretary.” “ Y ou had a good deal to do with the South Hants Cricket Club ? ” “ I was secretary in the time when the club occupied the position of the county club. At that time we bad Dan. Day and B. Bodle as professionals. Day was bowling for George Parr in the England matches in such great form that in a couple of years Parr practically bowled him off his legs; but for all that, he was a fine bowltr. Mr. Frere and I played in all the South Hants matches for years, generally doing the greater part of the bowling. The club moved from the Antelope ground when the new ground was opened. In 1888-9, I organized driving tours for the club to the West of England. We went to Salisbury, West- bury, Warminster, Bridgewater and Yatton, Mr. Chamberlayne’s then resi dence. In the second year we did things on rather a larger scale. I remember that inYatton on this year, where we were most hospitably entertained by Mr. Cbam- berlayne, we found Mr. W. G. Grace and Mr. Gilbert opposing us, and that Mr. E. P. Cassan, who played for Oxford, bowled W.G. with the last ball of his first over. Both the tours were thoroughly enjoyable, and they only cost us £9 or £10 each, which I think is pretty reasonable for a ten days’ tour by coach. After the first day we used to start in the evening directly after the match finished, and had acbarming drive of about twenty to twenty-four miles through beautiful country, and reached our des tination in time for supper, about 9 p.m. We took nothing with us but our cricket bags, all the luggage being sent on by train during the day by a man servant. In this way we were able to do the whole tour with one team of horses. On each cccasion we were admirably coached by Mr. Herbert Munday, who, although he was driving over an entirely strange line of country, never made the slightest mistake. I wonder that 6uch tours as those have not become common, but as far as I know, they have never been attempted except by the South Hants C.C. We used to have a most enjoyable tour every year in the Isle of Wight, and from 1882 to 1895 or 1896 I captained the team, and made all the arrangements. We stayed always at the Marine Hotel at Yentnor, where we were admirably catered for by Host W. Judd.” QTJERNMOBE SCHOOL v. FOREST HILL SCHOOL.—Played at Ivy Ground, Forest Bill, on May 27.
