174 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 28, 1903. TH E PU B L IC SCHOOLS IN 1903. The captain this year at A r d i n g ly C o lle g e is T. E. R. Harris, who was in last year’steam, but most of the others have left. There is plenty of talent, but it is in the rough, and from present appearances the batting will be far from strong. However, the fielding is better than it has been for some time, whilst there are several useful bowlers. The school badly needs the help of a professional. MAY. 30. Home, v. Ardingly JUNE. . The first, a fast medium change bowler, the latter a slow medium left hand. The most promising recruits are A. J. Waugh, bat and slow right hand bowler ; B. G. Guy and J. C. Custance, bats ; A. K. Kitson, wicket-keeper; C. V. Mercer, fast medium right hand bowler; F . H. A. Elton, small, but a good bat; G. R. Watson, free bat and medium right-hand bowler. The fielding is pretty good. MAY. SI. There are no young players of especial merit. Much is hoped of Bignell, who gained his colours last year. He is in his seventeenth year, and is a good free bat, perhaps a little too fond of pulling a straight ball. MAY. 16. v. A. P. Graves, Esq.’s XI. 21. v. F. H. Bow<1en-Smith’s XI. 30. v. Kerr, who is a good fast medium bowler, and two promising bats in Hunting and Gillespie. The school has a very good slow bowler in Millar, while King promises to be quite a good medium bowler. The rest of the team can all bat a little and they are a very good fielding side. MA.Y. 2. Pinkie, v. Brunswick 7. Mavisbank, v. Lasswade 9. Pinkie, v. Leith Franklin 16. Pinkie, v. Clarendon 23. There are three Old Colours left at S h e r b o rn e , P. Smith, A. H. Ross, T. Lang, Smith being captain. A. H. Ross is a very fine field, and T. Lang is a sterling bat, who should make plenty of runs this season. There are also three second eleven colours left, W. T. Ross, R. J. Bamberger and D. G. Campbell. Of these R. J. Bamberger and D. G. Campbell are very promising bowlers, the former being right hand, the latter slow to medium left hand. Of others without colours at present Brown is a good wicket- keep, Homfray a very fair bat, and Little a most promising young left hander. For the last few places there is very keen competition amongst several young recruits. On the whole the prospects are a good deal brighter than they were last year, the fielding and the bowling in particular being up to the average. MAY. 19. Home, v. T. W. Wilson, Esq.’s XI. 30.
