Cricket 1903

M ay 28, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 173 NOTTS y. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Trent Bridge on May 25, 26 & 27. Drawn. During the whole of the first day the Notts men on a perfect wicket were scoring at a great pace, and when stumps were drawn the total was 484 for two wickets. The first pair, Jones and Iremonger, got the measure of the attack almost from the first, and put on 141 for the first wicket in an hour and three- quarters. At three o’clock the two Gunns came together, and for the rest of the day they kept their wickets intact, W . Gunn being not out 124 when stumps were drawn and J. Gunn not out 193. When the latter came in W. Gunn had already scored 24, but he set to work in earnest and soon left him far behind, his first hundred in county cricket taking him only an hour and three-quarters to put together. On Tuesday morning the partnership was soon dissolved, having produced 367 runs in three hours and three quarters. W. Gunn was the first to go, having batted in quite his old style. His nephew went on his way rejoicing, treating all the bowling as if it were the most commonplace stuff in the world, and was within six runs of his third hundred when Whitehead bowled him. Bis innings had only lasted for four hours and a half, duriog which he had always played a wonderfully good and bold game. Dixon's fine in nings ineluded a 6 and fifteen 4’s. Notts declared with seven wickets down. For Leicestershire De Trafford played an altogether delightful innings and made his 70 m about an hour. Later Whitehead played a fine game, but the innings was over before stumps were drawn, and 14 runs were made in the foilow-on without loss. Yesterday King and Knight gave such a splendid display of batting that not only were Leicestershire saved from defeat, but made a most honourable draw. N otts A.O. Jones, cR. ARTHUR SHREWSBURY. (Obiit May 9th, 1903.) With honours thick upon him, deathless fame, •Mighty exponent of our national game, If tears were needed, surely those unseen Would keep that spot in “ God’s own acre ” green, The will of God is apt, “ tho’ hard to bear,” Inscrutable, and we must leave it there, Too sad for words, No more to face the wicket, “ Bowled by himself,” unknown in Rules of Cricket. Farewell for ever, thankful not to know, How much he suffered ere the tragic blow. “ Memoria in Etema .” “ a n a tio n ’s e p ita p h .” A debt we owe thee, and will keep the charge, The world the better for thy name writ large.
