Cricket 1903

172 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 28, 1903. and Fry put on 70 for the first wicket, and then Fiy and Eillick played out time, the former being at 64 and the latter at 45. The total was 142 for 1 wicket, so that Sussex had much the best of the situation. Killick was soon out on the next morning, but Ranjitsinhji then joined Fry, and the two famous batsmen obtained a mastery over the bowling. At lunch time the total was 3i3, Fry being not out 142 and Banjitsiohji not out 105, but immediately after the game was resumed the latter was caught at short leg. The partnership had produced 195 runs in two hours and a quarter. After this the end came sooner than was anticipated. Fry was at the wickets five hours for his great innings of 181. Lancashire had to go in against a balance of 260, and when stumps were drawn had lost 4 wickets for 92 (R. H. Spooner not out 41). Yesterday Sharp and Spooner batted so well that the innings’ defeat was saved, the partnership producing 160 runs. Sharp made the highest score of his career in first-class cricket, and was batting for two hours and a quarter. L a n c a sh ir e . First innings. A.C.Maclaren,c Butt, b Relf 15 R. H. Played at Worcester on May 25, 26 and 27. Drawn. Although Hirst had not completely recovered from his accident, he was well enough to bat, and as things turned out he played the bestinniogs of the first day, scoring 123 in about a couple of hours. During his partnership with Wilkinson, who played a fine game, 145 runs were put on in an hour and twenty-fi»e minute*. This was the only long stand of the day, but nearly every member of the teim made a very useful sc jre. When stumps were drawn Lord Hawke was not out 49, and Bedford not out 20, the total being 478 for nine wickets. On the next morning Lord Hawke scored quickly, and brought his total to 76 before he was bowled. Worcestershire made a very bad start, but aft-r Rhodes had taken two wickets a gojd stand was made by Arnold and Wheldon Later Wbeldon and H. K. Foster played very fine cricket, and at the end of the innings A. W. Isaacs made the first 50 of his career in first-class cricket. In the fo low-on Worcestershire lost two wickets for 9 before stumps were drawn. They seemed to have no earthly chance of saving the match, but Wheldon and Arnold made a splendid stand, and later H. K. Foster and Brinton played so finely that a drawn game was easily brought about. Foster’s innings was exceptionally good, for he was obliged to bat practically with one hand during the last two hours. Worcestershire may well be pleased with the result of this match, for if ever a side came triumphantly out of overwhelming difficulties this one did. Y obkshire . Brown, (J.
