Cricket 1903
162 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 28, 1903. hands the occasions when he was com pletely mastered. In later years he seemed to lose som e o f his d evil, and to rely m ore on accu racy than an yth in g else. H e seemed afraid to tem pt a bats m an, and to be satisfied w ith keeping him quiet. A nd u n til the time when he ga v e up first-class cricket, and show ed a genius fo r um piring, he could always keep a batsm an quiet, even when other m en w ere bein g hit about all over the field. A lth ou gh A ttew ell m ade his reputation as a bow ler, he wag always a batsman w h o had to be reckoned w ith. I cannot say that, either as a spectator or as one o f his opponents, I ever felt any pleasure w hen I saw him g o in g to the wickets, fo r I never had the least adm iration for his style, althou gh I cou ld n ot help ap p reciatin g his sang froid. In the old days he had a w ay o f treatin g a bad b a ll w ith a respect w h ich alm ost disgusted the bow ler, w h o was n o t m uch m ore happy w hen he singled out the best ba ll o f an over fo r a boundary hit. H e had a style o f his ow n , and I think that at an y period o f his career I should have know n, im m ediately I came in sight o f the area set apart fo r play, that he was at the wickets, an d at an y period o f his cireer I should have been g lad to see the back o f him . F o r all that I have seen him p la y some p articularly g o o d innings, often at times w hen far better batsm en than he were unable to d o an yth in g whatever with the b ow lin g . H e alw ays w ore a peaceful sm ile when he w en t to tbe w icket, as th ou gh an ticipatin g a period o f restful ness and calm , and I am bound to say that the anticipation was frequently realised, fo r there was som ething ?repose ful in a lo n g innings o f his. P rob ably if he had not been such a great bow ler, he w ou ld have been a great batsman. W . A . B etteswortei . B rom ley T o w n . NATIONAL PROVINCIAL BANK v.
