Cricket 1903
M a t 21, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 157 Cox and Bland hit merrily during their stand for the last wicket, adding 38 in less than twenty minutes. Wm. Gunn was dis posed of cheaply in the second innings, and for the good position Notts found themselves in on Tuesday night they had to thank John Gunn and the Rev. H. Staunton. Yester day, owing to the news of the tragic death of Shrewsbury, there was no play, anarrange ment to that effect being quickly come to by the two captains. N o tts . A. O. Owing to the soft nature of the ground, no play was possible in this match on Monday or Tuesday, but so greatly did the ball triumph over the bat yesterday that it was found possible to arrive at a definite conclusion, the M.C.C. winning shortly before time by nine wickets. W.G., Murdoch, and Wynyard were seen to greater advantage on the difficult wicket than the younger players, the collapse of London County in each innings after the dismissal of Grace and Murdoch being very marked. Hearne and Trott proved very difficult to play, the success of the home side being due almost entirely to their efforts. Mr. R. M. Bell, of the Sutton Club, bowled with greater success than his figures would lead one to suppose. Owing presumably to the collapse of the side, Gamble batted in his everyday clothes in the first innings of London County. L ondon C o u n ty . W . G. The Next XVI. won by an innings and 26 runs. Thanks chiefly to a good all-round display by Roberts, and a capital piece of bowling by the Clifton freshman, Keigwin, the Next XVI. experienced no difficulty in winning the match with an innings to spare. Roberts obtained his runs in about an hour and a- half, his chief hits being five 4’s, five 3*s, and six 2’s. The bowling successes of Keigwin (seven for 42) and Roberts (six for 37) cer tainly augurs well for Cambridge. N e x t S ix t e e n . C.H.Eyre,c and bMann 26 R.F. Oxford won by 59 runs. Thanks to a capital, if somewhat lucky, dis play by W. Findlay, the University were able to hold the leaa throughout, eventually winning by 59 runs. The county, for whom the Colonial player, Cuffe, made his first appearance, gave a very poor display, being dismissed by Evans and Martin for 98. The former, who is a nephew of the famous Mr. A. H. Evans, gives promise of developing into a good all-round player. Bird worried the Oxonians greatly in their second innings, obtaining seven wickets at a cost of 41, whilst Cuffe, who had failed as a bowler at his first attempt, took three for 25 at his second.
