Craw ford and Gill were making their first appear ance for the county; on the other hand Tyldesley was absent from the Lancashire XI. There was no play on Monday. After a few overs on Tuesday morning, during which Lancashire lost two wickets for 6 runs, rain came down and stopped play until after lunch. When play was resumed Sharp proved to be in good form, his 54 being the chief score in the innings of 164. At the close of play the home side had made G9 for the loss of Mr. Wood’s wicket, and so had none the worst of the play. Yesterday, however, run-getting proveda somewhat difficult matter, Barnes and Webb bowling so effectively that the nine outstanding wickets of Leicestershire realised but 65 runs. Possessing a lead of 40, Lanca shire commenced their second venture, and, but for Maclaren’s fine innings of 91, would probably have been dismissed for 50. Barnes and Webb again proved in rare form and assisted by a capital piece of bowling on the part of Littlewood, enabled Lancashire to gain a substantial victory. L im a s h ir k . First innings. A. As usual, when so many counties are play ing championship matches, the M.C.C. found great difficulty in getting together a good team ; indeed they had to rely almost entirely on their professionals, and both in batting and bowling the side was very weak. There was no cricket on Monday or Tuesday. Yesterday, the ground in front of the pavilion proving unplayable, the practice ground was utilised, this being the first occasion upon which an important match had been contested in that enclosure. Walker Wainwright bowled with great effect for the Yorkshire- men, obtaining six wickets during the innings for 49 runs, and giving great promise of future excellence. In one over he disposed of Llewellyn, Board and Beldam, the score then being 88. Braund and Trott both batted well, the latter claiming 37 out of 55 in 35 minutes. Rhodes and Brown opened the county’s innings in fine form, sending up 59 ere a wicket fell. The fine start, however, was not maintained, only Rhodes appearing able to cope successfully with the attack. When the last wicket fell at 184, he was still undefeated with 98 to his credit, having carried his bat right through the innings. His display was a very fine one, considering the state of the ground. Runs were always difficult to obtain, and a definite result never appeared possible. M.C.C. an d G rou n d . The Gentlemen of England won by 42 runs. It rained nearly all day at Cambridge on Monday, and no play was possible. On Tuesday the Varsity, with the exception of Phillips and Harper, could do very little against the bowling of Bosanquet and Cran field. The Gentlemen, on the other hand, soon began to make the Cambridge bowling look easy. The stand of the day was effected by Poidevin and Bosanquet, who, by means of very bright cricket, added 103 runs whilst together for the third wicket in 55 minutes. Poidevin’ s display was probably the better of the two, though Bosanquet’s was of a very high standard. The former’schief hits were a 5 and nine 4’s, and the latter’s seven 4’s. Yesterday the ’ Varsity gave a very feeble dis play and but for the partnership of 94 by Dow son and Fry would have cut a very sorry figure indeed. Although Dowson gave aneasy chance when 40 to Bradley at extra cover-point, his innings was a very praiseworthy one. He batted an hour andthree-quarters, and hit eight 4’s.Cambridge eventually had to acknowledge defeat by 42 runs. C am bridge U n iv e r sity . Played at Brighton on May 11, 12, and 13. Sussex won by 163 rung. The Sussex eleven for this match was at its full strength—for Newham and Braun seem only to play now when some of the big guns are away, and it is necessary to have somebody who can make runs—while Wor cestershire included in their ranks Keene, a young Surrey professional who has qualified. Keene is a left-hand bowler of medium pace, and on the first day he did well enough to impress the critics favourably. Sussex made a most unpromising start, for Fry began the season by losing his wicket to a brilliant caught and bowled before he had scored. Vine and Killick then, as so often before, put a good appearance on the game before they were separated, and alittle later C. L. A. Smith played such a good innings that his place in the team ought at last to be safe. Ranjitsinhji disappointed the spectators, who had to fall back on some hitting by Butt. Vine was sixth out, after batting patiently and well for an hour and three quarters. When Worcestershire went in Fry almost immediately brought off a great catch at square leg, which disposed of Bowley, after which Wheldon and Bromley-Murtin made a stand. Wheldon played excellent cricket for an hour and a half. When stumps were drawn Worcestershire had lost 7 wickets for
