This match was abandoned on Saturday morning without a ball being bowled. S u r r e y . —L. Walker and E. Heaketh-Pritchard and Rev. W. V. Jephson, with Llewellyn, Webb, Bowell, Stone and Kitchener. OXFORD UNIVERSITY FRESHMEN’S MATCH. Played at Oxford on May 7, 8 and 9. Abandoned. On a very slow wicket batsmen were placed at much disadvantage on the first day, but Norris, Worsley, Sherington and Lang- dale all distinguished themselves. When stumps were drawn Mr. Evans’s side had lost 5 wickets for 60. On the next day the weather was favourable, and by the time that stumps were drawn three innings had been finished. The day’s cricket was chiefly remarkable for the good bowling of the Rev. C. J. Burroughs, an old Marlburian; he took 5 wickets for 17 runs. In the second innings of Mr. Findlay’s side Worsley played a fine innings, his 48 including a six and seven 4’s. Lyle also did well. On Saturday a heavy storm brought about a drawn game, although, in all probability, another half- hour would have decided the match in favour of Mr. Findlay’s side, for against the left- hand bowling of Sandeman no one could offer any efiective resistance. NOTTS. Arranged for May 6, 7 and 8 at Lord’s. Abandoned. On the first day play was out of the ques tion, and on the next morning it was so obvious that the wicket would not be fit for cricket that the game was at once abandoned. There was very little play on the first day of this match, as a storm in the middle of the afternoon stopped cricket. The bowlers held the upper hand, but J. G. Hirsch played a fine innings, and Dowson, who, as captain, went in last, scored 45 out of 49 in the course of the eight overs during which he was batting. Mr. Ebden’s side had lost two wickets for 8 when play ended. Very little progress was made with the match on the next day, but in the course of two hours and a half eleven wickets fell. Keigwin bowled very well indeed on a difficult wicket. When play was abandoned for the day, a little after three o’clock, Mr. Dowson’s side had lost two wickets for 22 in their second innings, having led by 45 on the first. On the third day a fresh pitch was prepared and the bats men showed to greater advantage. Page and Eyre made a big stand lor the third wicket, and the tail nearly all batted well. Just before Mr. E bden’s side could commence the fourth innings o f the match rain came down and there was no more play. M r . E. M. D owson ’ s S ide . First innings. Second innings. C. C.
