Cricket 1903

A pril 30, 1903. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 103 S U R R E Y C O U N T Y C R IC K E T C L U B . The follow ing is the report of the comm ittee:— The record of the County Eleven showed some improvement on that of the previous reason, although it did not come up to the best traditions of Surrey cricket. In the County Championship twenty-eight matches were played. Of these, eight were won, five lost, and fifteen drawn. The Eleven did not lose an Inter-County Match at the Oval during the season. Of the eight matches played outside the County Cham pionship, one was won, five were lost, and two drawn. The cricket shown hy the Second Eleven was again full of promise. In the competi tion for the championship of the Minor Counties Cricket Association they were not beaten in any of the ten matches played, and only lost one point on the first innings. Of tbe four matches not in the Champion ship, one was won, two were lost, and one drawn. The pressure of business has compelled Mr. D. L. A. Jephson to give up the captaincy of the County Eleven. The committee desire to place on record their hearty appreciation of the zeal and devotion Mr. Jephson has shown in carrying out the arduous duties of his responsible position during the last few years. They do not propose at present to fill up the vacancy, and hope that Mr. Jephson will be able to play and still captain the side on many occasions. Home and home matches have been arranged with all the first-class counties for this year, as well as with the two Universi ties and the London County C.C. The Gentlemen of Philadelphia will finish their tour with a match against Surrey at the Oval on August 6th, 7th, and 8th. The Gentle men will meet the Players at the Oval on July 9th, 10th and 11th. Baring the year 170 new members were elected. So far 3,480 members have paid their subscriptions for 1903. Notwithstanding the exceptionally wet season, which affected very prejudicially the roceipts of most of the County matches, the accounts show a profit of £31 9s. 2d. on the year’s working. Considering also the exceptionally large expenditure for repairs, amounting to over nine hundred pounds, this result cannot be considered unsatisfactory. The Committee regret that they will no longer be able to count on the services of Mr. V . F. S. Crawford, who has been appointed Secretary of the Leicestershire C.C. Mr. Crawford has rendered valuable assist ance to the County Eleven, and the members will wish him every success in his new career. The following members of the committee retire by rotation, and are eligible for re- election: G. Everett, Sir It. Hanson, Bart., K. J. Key, M. W. Marshall, Bev. E. W . Northey, J. B. Oakley, C. A. Stein, and A. S. Tabor. The annual general meeting of the club will be held in the Pavilion on Thurday, May 7th, at 5 p.m. The Committee feel it necessary again to call the attention of members to the fact that their tickets are non-transfcrable and must not be lent to another person. Friends introduced into the Pavilion under Rule 13 will only be admitted at the principal door by the main entrance to the ground, and not at any of the gates in front of the 1 avilion. Their names must be enterod by the Member at the time of introduction in the book provided for the purpose. MATCH EXPENSES. £ 8. d.
