Crawford and Brockwell (W.) were in together, the amateur received the full force of a drive from his partner on the arm, which caused his temporary retirement. Notts v. Gloucestershire, at Nottingham, July 18th, 19th and 20th. In the latter’s second innings G. L. Jessop made 37 out of 38 in ten minutes. Lancashire v. Gloucestershire, at Manches ter, July 25th, 26th and 27th. In the first innings of Gloucestershire G. L. Jessop made a huge drive out of the ground. Surrey v. Yorkshire, at the Oval, July 25th, 26th and 27th. This was to have been played for the benefit of Lockwood (W. H.), hut, owing to rain, not a hall could he howled. Worcestershire v. Somersetshire, at Wor cester ; Essex v. Leicestershire, at Leyton; Notts v. Kent, at Nottingham. These matches were to have been played on July 25th, 26th and 27th, but, owing to rain, not a hall could he howled. Sussex v. Hampshire, at Brighton, July 25th, 26th and 27th. In the first innings of Hampshire, Butt (H. B.) made six catches at the wicket. Derbyshire v. Lancashire, at Derby, July 29th, 30th and 31st. The first eight overs delivered by Hulme (J.), for Derbyshire, were maidens. Essex v. Middlesex, at Leyton, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd. G. W. Beldam, who was injured on the first day of the match, fielded throughout the first innings of Essex. He was unable to bat, and the Essex captain allowed him to retire from the game and his place to be taken by H. H. Cobb. Kent v. Essex, at Canterbury, August 5th, 6 th and 7th. Every batsman in the first innings of Essex obtained double figures, the lowest score being 11 by Mead (W.) A curious incident occurred during the innings. Bussell (T. M.) drove a ball to B. N. B. Blaker at extra mid-off, which the fieldsman took close to and, as it transpired, off the ground. He did not throw up the ball, but the batsman himself appealed to one of the umpires—Smith (A. F.)—who said “ out.” Bussell had started to retire when J. B. Mason, the Kent captain, learning that Blaker had not caught it, told him to resume batting. The batsman, however, failed to profit thereby. In the first innings of Kent, Bussell (T. M.) stumped four and caught two. Gloucestershire v. Sussex, at Bristol, August 5th and 6 th, In the second innings of Gloucestershire, B. W . Bice (10) and G. L. Jessop ( 66 ) added 66 runs for the second wicket in 28 minutes, all of which were made by the latter. Jessop made his first 21 in five minutes and reached his 50 in 20 minutes. He scored off 22 of the 37 balls he received, hitting a six, ten four’s, two three’s and five two’s. Yorkshire v. Lancashire, at Leeds, August 5th, 6 th and 7th. This match was played for the benefit of Brown (J. T., sen.). During the three days 59,572 people passed through the turnstiles. Notts v. Essex, at Leyton, August 8 th, 9th and 10. In the first innings of Notts Anthony (G.) scored 57 out of 64 in 30 minutes, obtaining 50 in 16 minutes. There were six centuries made in the match, A. O. Jones scoring 149 and Iremonger (J.) 133 for Notts, and Carpenter (H.) 118, A. J. Turner 120, F. L. Fane 120 not out and P. Perrin 108 not out for Essex. Lancashire v. Derbyshire, at Manchester, August 8 th, 9th and 10 th. Lancashire declared their first innings closed at 183 for five wickets, to which Derbyshire replied with 209. The Lancashire second innings also was declared closed. London County v. M.C.C. and Ground, at the Crystal Palace, August 8 th, 9th and 10 th. London County made 633, to which the M.C.C. replied with 501. Notts v. Derbyshire, at Welbeck, August 12th, 13th and 14th. D. Bottom, who had previously assisted both Derbyshire and Notts as a professional, re-appeared for Derbyshire in this match as an amateur. Essex v. Yorkshire, at Leyton, August 15th and 16th. In the first innings of Essex, Hirst (9. H.), in bowling Carpenter (H.), broke a stump. Surrey v. Lancashire, at the Oval, August 15th, 16th and 17th. On the second day Baker (A.) played a very patient innings for Surrey. He was in an hour for his first three runs, and took 145 minutes to obtain his score of 25 not out. Somersetshire v. Kent, at Taunton, August 15th and 16th. J. Daniell caught five men in the Kent innings. Gloucestershire v. Essex, at Clifton, August 19th, 20th and 21st. Of the 912 runs made in this match, 123 were extras (90 byes, 28 leg-byes, 3 wides, and 2 no-halls). Sussex v. Yorkshire, at Brighton, August 19th, 20th and 21st. Sussex scored 560 for five wickets, innings closed, and Yorkshire 92 and 107 for no wicket. C. B. Fry made 209 and Killick 200 in the Sussex innings. On the first day one wicket fell and 307 runs were made, and on the last day two wickets fell for 150 runs. Somersetshire v. Hampshire, at Taunton, August 22 nd, 23rd and 24th. Hampshire’s total of 642 for nine wickets (innings closed) took but five hours and five minutes to com pile. On the second day of the match 649 runs were obtained for the loss of eleven wickets, Hampshire making 570 for eight wickets and Somerset 79 for three. For Hampshire, Llewellyn (G. C. B.) scored 153 out of 221 in one hundred minutes. The Hampshire score was taken from 400 to 500 in forty-five minutes. Lancashire v. Notts, at Manchester, August 22nd, 23rd and 24th. In the first innings of the former A. C. Maclaren (93) and TyldeBley, J. T. (161) took the score from 200 to 300 in forty minutes. Sussex v. Middlesex, at Brighton, August 22nd, 23rd and 24th. In the second innings of -Mi(idlest'x P. F. Warner obtained five fours from an over delivered by Vine (J.) Somersetshire v. Gloucestershire, at Taun ton, August 26th, 27th and 28th. In the second innings of Gloucestershire, Wrathall, H. (19) and W. S. A. Brown (25) made 32 runs for the first wicket in ten minutes. Yorkshire v. M.C.C. and Ground, at Scar borough, August 26th, 27th and 28th. E. Smith (96) was run out in an unusual manner during the Yorkshire innings. His partner, Bhodes (W.), hit a ball hard back to the bowler, Mead (W.), who accidentally turned it into Smith’s wicket. As Smith was out of his ground, backing-up, he was run out. Surrey v. Middlesex, at the Oval, August 29th, 30th and 31st. On the first day Hol land (P. C.) commenced fielding for Surrey, and his name was printed on the cards as one ot the home team. After several overs had been bowled, however, Holland, much to his surprise, was called off the ground to make way for Lees (W. S.). Yorkshire v. An England XI., at Scar borough, September 2nd, 3rd and 4th. In the second innings of Yorkshire, Hirst, G. H. (67) made 16 runs ( 6 , 4, 6 ) from three consecutive balls delivered by Braund (L. C.). An England XI. v. Yorkshire, at Lord’s, September 12th, 13th and 14th. G. L. Jessop played a remarkable innings of 233 for the England XI. He made 50 in 39 minutes, 79 in 55, 100 in 70, 150 in 100, 176 in 120, 200 in 135, and, in all, 233 (out of 318) in 150 minutes. He made his last 57 runs out of 59 in 30 minutes. TH E E N D .
