68 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A p b i l 17, 1902. Essex v. Gloucestershire, at Leyton, May 23rd, 24th and 25th. In the second innings of Gloucestershire G. L. Jessop scored 81 out of 111 in less than an hour, one hit sending the hall over the pavilion and out of the ground. Five hundreds were made in this match, Carpenter (H.) making 136 and C. McGahey 114 and 145 not out for Essex, and Board (J. H.) 161 and Hale (W. H.) 109 not out for Gloucestershire. Middlesex v. Somerset, at Lord’s, May 27th, 28th and 29th. Whilst fielding in the first innings of Middlesex, F. A. Phillips trod on his hand, and one of the spikes in his shoe broke a hone of his hand. He was unable to participate further in the match, and G. Fowler was allowed to take his place. In the second innings of Somerset S. M. J. Woods made 83 out of 111 in 70 minutes. Hampshire v. Derbyshire, at Southampton, May 27th, 28th and 29th. Hampshire won by two wickets—their first victory in a county match since August, 1899. Middlesex v. Gloucestershire, at Lord’s, May 30th, 31st, and June 1st. In the first innings of the former, an over delivered by Roberts (F. G.) yielded 24 runs, the first ball going for four wides, and the remaining five being sentby H. B. Chinnery to the boundary. In the second innings of Middlesex, P. F. Warner and H. B. Hayman at one time during their partnership added 149 runs in anhour. In the second innings of Gloucester­ shire, G. L. Jessop made 50 in 35 minutes, 100 (out of 136) in 57minutes, and altogether 124 in 75 minutes. At various times he made 25 in five minutes, 29 in five minutes, 52 in 12 minutes, and 43 off three overs (of which he received 15 balls). Hampshire v. Yorkshire, at Bournemouth, June 3rd and 4th. In the first innings of Hampshire, the last four wickets fell for no runs. Kent v. Gloucestershire, at Gravesend, June 3rd, 4th and 5th. In the first innings of the former, P. C. Baker (89) and Heame, A. (40) at one time added 50 in 20 minutes. Baker made 41 off three consecutive overs from Paish (A.). Surrey v. Somersetshire, at the Oval, June 3rd, 4th and 5th. In the first innings of Somersetshire, Richardson (T.), irf bowling to Lewis (A. E.), hit the off-stump hard without removing a bail. Oxford University v. Somersetshire, at Oxford, June 6 th and 7th. W. Findlay, the ’Varsity wicket-keeper, was hurt, and the Rev. A. P. Wickham, who was assisting Somersetshire, was for some time allowed to keep wicket in his stead. In the second innings of Somerset, V. T. Hill and Robson (E.) at one time added 123 runsin 35 minutes. Cambridge University v. Surrey, at Cam­ bridge, June 6 th, 7th and 8 th. E. G. McCorquodale, who bowled before luncheon on the first day, injured himself, and by the courtesy of the Surrey captain, L. S. Keigwin, of Peterhouse, was allowed to take his place. Leicestershire v. Lancashire, at Leicester, June 6 th, 7th and 8 th. In the secondinnings of Leicestershire, Whitehead (J. P.), was given out “ obstructing the field.” Notts, v. Sussex, at Nottingham, June 6 th, 7th and 8 th. In the second innings of Sussex, C. B. Fry carried his bat through the innings of 254 for 170. In the second innings of Notts, J. A. Dixon hit Yine (J.) to leg out of the ground. Cambridge University v. South Africans, at Cambridge, June 10th, 11th and 12th. On the first day of the match, the latter scored 519 for seven wickets. B. C. Cooley, in his 126 not out at one time obtained 41 off three overs. Essex v. Derbyshire, at Leyton, June 10th, 11th and 12th. In the first innings of Essex, Reeves, W. (87) and Russell, T. M. (22 not out) added 90 for the ninth wicket in 35 minutes. In the first innings of Derbyshire, Reeves (W.) took the last five wickets in 11 balls for no runs. Middlesex v. Notts., at Lord’s, June 10 th and 11 th. In the second innings of Notts., A. O. Jones (81) and Gunn, J. (35) at one time added 47 in 15 minutes. Leicestershire v. Sussex, at Leicester, June 10th, 11th and 12th. During the last ten minutes of the match the rain came down in torrents, and when the players reached the pavilion they were drenched to the skin. Sussex won. Gloucestershire v. Derbyshire, at Bristol, June 17th, 18th and 19th. G. L. JeBsop in his first innings scored 93 in 70 minutes, obtaining his first 50 in 25 minntes. In one over from Storer (W.) he made 17, and in the following from the same bowler a dozen. In his second innings he made 53 out of 64 in 40 minutes. Whilst fielding on the second day of the match O. W. T. Jessop fell and broke his collar-bone. The nature of the accident was not realised at the time, and on the last day of the match Jessop played an innings of 12 runs, which he followed up on the next day with 43 for Cheltenham Town v. Cheltenham College. Kent v. Middlesex, at Tonbridge, June 17th, 18th and 19th. On the second day of the match, 500 runs were made for the loss of 13 wickets, Middlesex making 404 for ten wickets, and Kent 96 for three. Sussex v. Notts., at Brighton, June 17th, 18th and 19th. In the second innings of Sussex, Yine (J.) batted 75 minutes without adding to his score. In the match he batted seven hours and ten minutes for 112 runs (55 not out and 57). Notts, v. Yorkshire, at Nottingham, June 20th and 21st. Notts, made 13 only in their first innings, Rhodes (W.) taking six wickets for four runs, and Haigh (S.) four for eight. The wickets fell as follows :—Hallam (A.) at 1, Gunn (W.) and Dench (C. E.) at 3, J. A. Dixon at 4, A. O. Jones and Gunn (J.) at 8 , Carlin (J.), Harrison (I.), and Anthony (G.) at 10 , and Wass (T.) at 13. Whilst fielding in the first innings of Yorkshire, Shrewsbury (A.) split his hand, and, by consent of the Yorkshire captain, Harrison (I.) was allowed to fill his place.* Surrey v. Oxford University, at the Oval, June 24th, 25th and 26th. On the first day of the match, 606 runs were scored for the loss of ten wickets, Surrey making 497, and Oxford University nine without loss. Gloucestershirev. Lancashire, atGloucester, June 24th, 25th and 26th. In the first innings of the latter, Holland (J.) batted 45 minutes ere making his first run. Sussex v. Cambridge University, at Brighton, June 24th, 25th and 26th. There were two partnerships of over 200 in the Sussex innings, C. B. Fry taking part in both. In the second innings of Cambridge University, S. H. Day (90) claimod 82 of the 86 runs added for the last wicket, his partner, C. D. Dewe, carrying out his bat for fonr. Leicestershire v. In the first innings of Gloucestershire every batsman on the side reached double figures, the lowest score in the completed innings being 16 by Roberts (F. G.). M.C.C. and Ground v. Cambridge Uni­ versity, at Lord’s, June 27th, 28th and 29th. In the second innings of the former, Trott (A. E.) made 44 out of 50 whilst in with F. L. Fane. From an over of E. K. Wilson he made a 2 and five 4’s, sending one ball among the seats on the pavilion roof, and another on the portico balcony. Sussex v. Oxford University, at Eastbourne (Saffrons), June 27th, 28th and 29th. On the last day of the match the Oxford Uni­ versity wicket-keeper, W. Findlay, retired from the game, and his place was allowed by the Sussex captain to be filled by H. Bomford, who had not taken part in the match. Surrey v. Kent, at the Oval, July 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In the second innings of Surrey, Y. F. S. Crawford (75) scored five 4’s and a single from an over delivered by C. Blythe. Lancashire v. South Africans, at Man­ chester, July 1st, 2nd and 3rd. E. E. Steel played his first match for Lancashire since 1888. He scored 23 and 69 not out. In the second innings of the visitors, J. H. Sinclair hit a ball from Huddlestone (J.) out of the ground. Lancashire v. Sussex, at Manchester, July 4th, 5th and 6 th. In the second innings of Lancashire, H. G. Garnett and Tyldesley (J. T.) at one time added 50 runs in 15 minutes. Yorkshire v. Leicestershire, at Scarborough, July 4th, 5th and 6 th. In the B econd innings of the latter, Tunnicliffe (J.) made five catches at slip. Surrey v. South Africans, at the Oval, July 8 th, 9th and 10th. In bowling J. H. Sinclair in the first innings of the latter, Richardson (T.) sent a bail 40 yards 2 feet. Lancashire v. Somersetshire, at Manchester, July 11 th, 12 th and 13th. Of the last 60 runs scored by Lancashire on the opening day Tyldesley (J. T.) claimed 52, his partner, Hallows (J.), making the remaining eight. In the first innings of Somersetshire Mold (A.) was no-balled 18 times in 10 overs for throwing by Phillips (Jas.), of Lord’s, on five occasions when Phillips was the square- leg umpire and thirteen times when he was at the bowler’s wicket. Sussex v. Leicestershire, at Hastings, July 11th, 12th and 13th. In the first innings of the latter, Knight, A. E. (99) claimed 76 of the 86 runs added for the fourth wicket in partnership with R. Mac­ Donald. The latter played a very steady innings. He took fifty minutes to make six, 210 minutes to reach 50, and, altogether, batted 375 minutes for 127, made out of 382 whilst in. Yorkshire v. Somersetshire, at Leeds, July 15th, 16th and 17th. On the second day of the match Somersetmade 549 for five wickets. This was Yorkshire’s first defeat in County Championship matches sincetheir matchwith Kent at Tonbridge, in August, 1899. Somerset made 87 and 630; Yorkshire 325 and 113. Somerset, after being 238 runs in arrears, won by 279. Worcestershire v. South Africans, at Wor­ cester, July 15th, 16th and 17th. This match ended in a tie. Nine runs were required when the last Worcestershire man went in. When the scoreswere equal Wilson (H.) was “ st M. Bisset, b R. Graham.” Derbyshire v. Leicestershire, at Glossop, July 18th, 19th and 20th. W. Sugg reappeared in this match for Derbyshire as an amateur, having always previously ranked as a pro­ fessional.
